Test drove a Jazz today
vastly overpriced? Nice ride, very smooth and quiet, quite gutless though? drove the CVT in sports mode & normal.
got him to A$21000 drive away for the Vti Manual which still isn't too spesh.
Your thoughts on the price?
Might look into a used '03.

Its a premium small car in Australia.
Its expensive compared to a Hyundai Getz @ A$13,490+ORC but very inexpensive compared to an A Class Merc 1.5L 70KW A$30,000+ORC to A$44,400+ORC for the 2.0L. A 1.4L Peugeot 206, 5 door 1.4L VW Polo & 1.4L Renault Clio start at A$19,000+ORC. $23,900+ORC 1.3L Smart ForFour. $19,250+ORC for the mid range Mazda2. Even a Toyota Corolla starts from A$19,750+ORC.
Most metal for money you can't go past a Falcon or Commodore. A$30,000 (inclusive of usual large discount) gets you a large car with a 190KW 6 cylinder and everything standard. Heaps heavier on the fuel, crap resale value but parts are cheap as.
The Jazz retains its resale pretty good. By the time you pay stamp duty / transfer fees on a 2nd hand one you save about $2,000 over new.
If you find 81KW from a 1,000kg car gutless then you probably also would find a 190KW Falcon weighing in at 1,700kg underpowered. Are you coming from a 5L+ V8 or turbo WRX, GTR? in which case everything else is going to be gutless.
I'd consider the Jazz good value in the market (pricing on par with the competition) with good power. Certainly has more power than those 1.4L & 1.5L European cars mentioned earlier. Honda build quality, reliability, safety and refinement within this class size. This months Australian Honda magazine has a feature story on an old lady who drives all around Australia constantly in her red Jazz, clocking up some big milage.

I can understand that. Maybe not over priced but you can get more for less in other brands...
I'm not coming from a v6 at all... currently driving a 1.5L mitsubishi lancer. Mabye it was the auto, but i feel i could shame the jazz in the lancer. From all the reviews saying how zippy it is, i expected it to be a noticable improvement, but i'm not sure. Good point with the stamp duty and crap...
the $21,000 auto and $19,000 manual VTi are exclusive of on road costs aren't they?

I went from an 154KW AU Falcon Ute (auto) to the Jazz VTI CVT and didn't find much of a power loss. The CVT is deceptive. It feels like its slipping and not going anywhere but it will do 9sec to 100km.
If your used to the wet clutch of motorbikes then you won't find the feeling as weird as if coming from a traditional auto car. You might still be slipping the clutch on a bike at over 100km/hr but your there in 3sec and well over 200km/hr in 7sec (thinking about clicking from 2nd to 3rd with another 4 gears to go).
The older 1.5L lancer puts out less power than the Jazz but not a whole heap less. The lancer is also probably a similar weight. Got to remember that the Lancer is supposed to be in Civic, Corolla small-medium sized class and the Jazz is Mirage, Colt, Mazda2, Echo, Getz, Yaris small class. The lines get very blurred when you have more usable interior space in the Jazz than alot of cars in that next size / class up.
Yeah $19,000 and $21,000 for the Jazz VTi manual and auto respectively are retail before on road costs so $21,000 drive away for a VTi manual sounds about right as a starting point.
