Come on guys...38?? THAT'S GREAT IN THE US!!!

Let's list all the cars that get better than that that are non-hybrid:

Corolla
A couple of Civics
maybe Scions
not much else...

And which of these are Wagons? Are either of the Scions wagons? The Matrix is very nice wagon but gets 34 mpg.

I am in no way disappointed. Would 48 have been better? Well, of course. But 38 is great.

You forgot
Toyota Yaris
Nissan Versa
every VW TDI...

38 is just average for cars larger than the fit.

Not fair. Like the Fit, neither Yaris nor Versa is out on the street yet, and Honda does not make Diesels, period!

Not fair? Did somebody make the little honda cry? LOL! You have to be joking. Facts are facts. Get used to them. Mark my words honda won't sell the 60k Fits in the first year like they want to. Not by a long shot. And I doubt half the people on here screaming about how great the Fit is will buy they car after they see it in person and the dealer is asking them to pluk down 15 large out the door.

Oh but Honda does make Diesels, and they are some of the best ones on the market. They are all over Europe and the UK. They currently do not make a diesel Fit, but it is just a matter of time. Ultimately, I would like a Fit with a small turbo diesel. In the meantime, I'll keep driving my '91 Civic wagon (30 MPG combined) until Honda offers either a smaller gas engine or a diesel in the US.

A very interesting day at fitfreak.net!!!!!

With so much build up and anticipation over the past few months, I think most of us started to envision something far beyond what the U.S. version has turned out to be.

With that said, this is still a very nice little car that has a great track record and a huge array of aftermarket support.

Hell, I'd love to see over 40mpg...but high 30's is certainly nothing to turn your nose up at.
I'm getting killed at the pump with my current car (18city/24hwy) which requires premium grade gas!!!!

My main complaint is the extended bumper (DOT required) but that can easily be remedied with a good body kit. I really love the fact that this car is a hatch and can hold a good haul of cargo.

As of now, this car is still at the top of my "wish list."

I guess I will reserve further judgement until I get to see this car in the flesh.

I, too, have on old Honda (a '90 Civic Hatchback), and it looks better every day. I like the versatility and comfort of the FIT's hatchback design; it beats my present Honda by a little, but gives me no improvement in fuel economy. So I ask myself, is a little more interior space and the convenience of 4 doors worth $13-$15 thousand? How much could I save myself by investing $13-$15 thousand in a solar system or a heat pump for the house?

33 mpg in the city? That's significantly worse than the 2005 civic hx. I am exceptionally disappointed in Honda and will not be purchasing.

Next.

I don't know if the sport's will move that fast at 15 but the base model with all it's goods at just 13ish should do just fine. As soon as any savy shopper compares the price to a Yaris with all the extras added, or sits behind the wheel of an inexpensive Korean alternative and realizes how much more quality Honda brings to the table, Fit will move high on their list.

The only problem with the Yaris, as i see it, is that it's butt-ugly

I actually passed 10th grade math, then went on to college and began developing software....merely stating that as Americans we lack such basic math skills we think getting a 38mpg Fit is a rip off.

Here are a couple facts you may be interested in.

1. Metric system = everyone but us.
2. 1 Imperial gallon of gasoline = 4.55 Liters = 1.2 U.S. Gallons(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_unit)
3. Imperial Gallons = the Metric System (see step 1).

So, lets do an equation based on a post JazzLover left back in July saying he got 5.5L per 100Km of driving in his Jazz. That would mean he drove approx 62 US miles on 5.5L, which is 1.45 gallons US.....so 62/1.45....break out them TI calcs.....42 mpg on a 1.4L DSI engine. And we get the 1.5L Vtec at 38 mpg.

Im not saying this is good, just stated that if you think Europe of Asia get better milage cars you are incorrect. Personally I think its rediculous that a 1992 Honda Civic HX 5 Manual was rated at 49/55mpg...and 14 years later we are blessed with 38mpg...wooptie freaking doo. My 2005 Civic gets 38mpg, thanks for nothing Honda Fit.

For a college graduate you are very misinformed. The metric system does not and has never used imperial gallons as a unit of measurement. The Imperial gallon is only used in the UK and a few former colonies such as Canada. The European community has exerted a lot of pressure to force the UK to switch away from imperial gallons, miles and pounds. The metric system uses liters, kilograms and meters.

As for the fuel economy question The Honda Jazz 1.2 (1.3 liter IDSI engine) is rated in the standard ECC fuel economy test:
Extra urban cycle 4.7 L/100km = 50 US mpg highway
Urban cycle 6.8 L/100km = 34.5 US mpg city
Mixed cycle 5.5 L/100km = 42.7 US mpg combined city and highway.

38mpg insted of 50 mpg is a huge difference. But I guess a 50 mpg Fit would compete too closely with the Civic hybrid so they had to give us a dumbed down version to protect profits. What a shame.

Sorry, I have only dealt with the British/Irish and they always talked about gallons meaning 4.55 L gallons. I took a realworld example from a post last summer to make my example where jazzlover said he got 5.5L/100km = 42mpg. Kind of like how my Civic says 38mpg, but I get 40mpg hwy...real world, not the sticker.

Regardless 42mpg sucks, 50mpg suck.....they had cars 15 years ago that got better milage than the Fit and the Civic Hybrid. I think I am going to Write a letter to Honda and ask how much they want to turn on the production line and make me a 92 civic HX. Hopefully George Bush's cousin or something doesn't work there, he might try to talk me into a Ridgeline...or some other waste of gasoline.

Did some research in the latest Consumers Reports car guide.
In the real world, Scions get 31-32 US MPG, Yaris gets 38 US MPG, Hyundai Accent gets like 27 US MPG...the only things that were better than the Fit claims to be are the Prius (41 US MPG) and the Insight (50 US MPG), so lets see what the Fit can do in independent testing.

Mark my words people..believe me now or believe me later..Honda would be stupid to price the fit at $15k, when I can go out and buy either a Civic Sedan or coupe for $500 less! That is bigger, faster and gets better mpg! In my paper a local dealer had 06 Sedans going for 14,455..

This wil be just like when Honda released the 02-05 Civic Si and put the damn MSRP at $19,199, when one could just spend an extra $2k and get the RSX-S..And nobody needs to be reminded of the Si's pathetic sales numbers.
