I doubt they'll put in a full IMA setup for weight and physical size reasons.

But the new SOHC i-VTEC engine (probably in 1.5-liter size) will probably offer about 115-117 bhp (SAE 08/04 net) and will probably offer 2-3 mpg better fuel economy if you use the current EPA tests. That means the next-generation Fit will likely be faster and also offer a bit more initial acceleration than the current car.

funny to see you guys going on about disappointment of the Honda Jazz/Fit Fuel consumption.. If my calculation is correct.. 31/38MPG = 6.1-7.5L/100km which is about correct for Auto / CVT here in Australia..

What do you guys expect? The Hybrid is about 4 - 5L/100km combined.. and the Jazz (non-Hybrid) is not far off.. Given that only a Toyota Prius cost 50% more and have only fifty something Kw in power.. and the Jazz / Fit has 81Kws..

Most medium size cars here in Australia do around 9 - 10L/100km and I am extremely happy with the Fit / Jazz !!!!!

However, don't be surprised that Honda offers the Multimatic CVT on the Fit by late this year--Honda is probably making sure the CVT unit can survive USA driving conditions.

This was discussed in another thread, but never really answered. I would love to see some industry research on US drivers/driving/conditions compared to the rest of the world to see why we are considered so different.

So spot on. I'm getting at absolute best 5L/100km which is 47MPG (US) on the highway and at worst 8.2L/100km city which is 28.6MPG (US). The official Australian government combined figure is 6.1L/100km or 38.5MPG (US). So this would seem to indicate that the US will give the same economy as the 1.5L VTEC CVT or manual Jazz does everywhere else in the world. No point looking at the figures for the i-dsi engine and expecting the same from the VTEC or looking at the 1.2L or 1.3L and expecting the same as the 1.5L VTEC. Only difference is everyone else in the world doesn't carry on like a bunch of wankers.

Car enthusiasts in the US have a pretty well developed whinge about not getting the same cars that the rest of the world gets...even when it doesn't matter much. If it's not the same, we must be getting the lame version, right?

Cool I am also dissapointed with FIT

I saw the US Fit at the LA auto show, it didn't look as appealing as the pictures do. The interior is nicer than the Yaris, but I think the exterior is nicer on the Yaris. Plus the Yaris gets better MPG. I will probably get a Yaris, or a Honda Civic HX 5 speed that gets 35-43 mpg

The rest of the world (where you're from) doesn't complain BECAUSE NO ONE
LISTENS! I'm sorry but last I noticed we're still THE NUMBER ONE CONSUMER MARKET IN THE WORLD. Companies do usually listen when enough north american's say something. You're just not used to having that kind of power at your disposal is all
But you do make a valid point - it is just a bunch of Fit Bitchin' TM

Seriously guys.. the fuel consumption in the Fit is one of the best in it's class.. I was driving my Fit on a long trip with full load in the car and the boot.. and I was doing like 5.8L/100km on straight roads which is 40.55mpg .. isn't that awesome... did like more than 400km and still got half a tank left.. AMAZING!!!!

My other Suzuki Swift with less horsepower cannot even match that... then again, that's probably why the Swift never make it to the US... (they better not to.. as you guys already whinge about the better fuel consumption Fit)

That maybe true to some point, but it sure would be nice to have the option of looking at a same Ford Focus you guys are getting vice a rebodied Mazda 3.

Speaking of wankers, when was the last time your rugby wallabies won an international test match?

Why to kiwis wear gum boots?

We can't win every rugby and cricket game all the time otherwise noone would want to play us. Has to be the only country that could win a gold medal at the winter olympics because all the other competitors fell over.

Gum boot are the Kiwis equivalent of a comfy pair of thongs for an Aussie. (We only wear thongs on our feet).

Forget about the regular Ford Focus we're getting the XR5 in the Aussie market early this year (2.5L 6 speed turbo 166kw 320nm) to compete against the VXR 2L (6 speed turbo 176kw 320nm) and Golf GTi (2L turbo 147kw 280nm awesome DSG and over 6 month waiting list).

They are the national shoe of Thailand, as well. Kiwis, gum boots, sheep?

See, that's what I'm whinging about. The most powerful engine in the U.S. Focus is a measly 154bhp. Not to mention it isn't even the same car as you are getting. There are many cases like this. It happens with motorcycles, too.

Its natural to get all the good bikes when you help with their development.
Mick Doohan 5 times motoGP champion
Wayne Gardner 1987 champion - now races an NSX in Japan
Valentino runs with a large Australian crew
As with most other vehicles hot weather testing is done in Australia.
Phillip Island as a very high speed flowing track provides a very different sort of track to Suzuka and Motegi for testing.

Those hot hatches still return about 10L/100km which is pretty good but a far cry from 6L/100km average from the Jazz.

I'm certainly not impressed by any asmatic less than 50kw car that fails to meet modern emissions requirements and safety standards that may have returned marginally better economy. Their day is gone and they should be left to rust in peace.

Was the 40.55mpg achieved using the CVT manual mode turned off? Have somehow found the CVT manual Mode to be no use at all.

Also, what speed and rpm are you cruising at when acheiving this mpg? Are you using US or Imperial Gal?

Fit Gas Mileage Comment

I agree with previous comments about disappointment in the Fit's US mileage. Part of the problem is comparisons with UK mileage where the Imperial gallon is a bit more than the US gallon. Nevertheless, I have decided to keep my 2000 Metro a bit longer. I still get over 40mpg in winter and over 44mpg in summer with this vehicle, and it's paid for.

I am still interested in the Fit, however, and will take a good look at it. I will have to decide between the Fit, and Yaris, and the new Golf diesel, with economy being my main goal.

And while I'm at it: shame on Detroit for reindroducing the silly muscle cars of the sixties in an attempt to regain market share. It may work short term, but these are the stupid cars they were making when the imports took over the marketplace. Why do they think they will work a second time around? Do they think baby-boomers are really that stupid?
