With Toyota introducing the worldwide Yaris to North American consumers, here's what I scooped up on what's available as standard and options on the Liftback model, which includes TRD options. The S model is not available in liftback but only in Sedan.

The VVT-i engine is timing chain driven, not belt driven. That right there is something I'm interested in. My daily driver itself is timing chain driven, no worries of a timing belt being snapped.

Ok I went and did some research and turns out that they have used belts on everything. However the K-series and alot of the newer engine designs are timing chains now, mainly to aide in i-vtec operation. And I found this -

I see all the benefits of using a chain and i see all the problems too with using it, personally speaking i still prefer a timing BELT.
There comes a time when this item has to be replaced eventually, with a belt type engine you change the belt, the tensioner, and the w/pump as required if you're in that section of the engine doing repair work, and basically thats it, no oil or mess.
With a chain engine you have to change the chain, the complete set of timing gears, two or three depending on the number of cams, the chain tensioner and its guide, the chainguides and the sealing gasket for the endcover.
As you can see its a much more labour intensive and costly job, and while the maintanance intervals are longer about 100,000 miles, i'd prefer to do the belt twice than do the chain once.
Weight doesn't even factor into this equation, since a chain and some solid toothed gears and tensioners, along with an alloy end cover, have to weigh more than the belt, a plastic end cover and the webbed timing belt gears.

Yes, the L15 uses a timing CHAIN.
