Anyone ever feel the door handles feel kinda flimsy? I started thinking that it might feel even weaker when the door is frozen. Anyone feel the same?

The door handles that pull out instead of the lift ones like ours seem much better.

 

Yeah, I agree with you. They do feel a little "wafer" esque, although I don't think they'll break or anything. But I like the look of them.

 

Yeah, the ones on my 09 feel like I'm going to break them off each time I open the door.

 

On my last car, a '99 Camry, the door handles were about like the Fit's. Sure as hell, I broke the driver's door handle off one morning when it was really cold outside. Cost about $100 to have the body shop replace it, if I remember correctly.

 

Mine have seen duty down to -25°F so far with no problems. Just remember if you door is frozen shut, be gentle or try other doors.

 

Yeah, the door handles sometime flip out of my fingers and I think - darn - please don't break! Never had any problems with them but they do feel a little flimsy.

i immediately noticed the driver's door handle was very "light" compared to the other doors.... so much so i've wondered "is it supposed to be that way?"

 

I did that one cold morning in my 87 Accord LX-i. I had the car warming up, went back outside to get in and go, and I pulled the driver's door handle right off. What really sucked is that the car was running, the other doors were locked, and the only person with a spare key was my mother who was 15 miles away. Also, the passenger's side keyhole didn't work, so I had to go into the trunk, fold the back seats down, and crawl through. Good times.

 

It's getting colder here, and I'm a little worried about my door handle's structural integrety, now that I've read some of these posts.

So why does Honda or any other car manufacturer continue to make door handles like this? I mean, it kind of a big deal when you break your door handle off, and they make the more rigid pull out ones like on the Civic too so...?

 

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I would hate for them to break...there's no way to switch the handle is there? Or would that require the whole door to be switched?

 

a girl i work with just broke the door handle off her bimmer. its a newer 7 series XD

 

Just use the rear hatch in case all handles came off....

Just because it feels light doesn't mean it's cheap or going to break. Think about it...ALL controls on the Fit are intentionally light to make it user friendly. Shifter, clutch, steering, doors, etc. All light-effort.

 

I agree, the handles on my 09 feel chintzy to me. Kind of wish the handles were the kind you pull out on, as with my VW, rather than the kind that lift up as with the Fit.

I agree in general. Just because something is light does not mean it is cheap. However, in the case of the door handles specifically, I think they do indeed feel fragile and cheap, not just lightweight. Handles that lift up like those on my Fit tend to slip out of your hand easier than handles you grasp or pull. A minor carp in relation to the goodness of the car overall, but an area that some anal engineer could improve in the future. They may not actually be weak, but they create the perception of weakness or low quality, and since opening the door is one of the first tactile impressions a perspective buyer may have of a car, I think it is a deficiency worth correcting down the road.

 

Darn doors LATCH like the bolt of a good rifle going home; solid thunk, and solid feel.
The door handles, OTOH, do shift a little when you tug 'em.
But, as they say, if it ain't broke, don't futz with it.
