this is really odd, but last night while sitting in traffic for over an hour,
i had a coolant smell going on.
anyone else ever had this problem?

 

Check your radiator, hoses for slight leaks or drips on the pavement. This happened to my 95 Civic and I had a cracked radiator.

or could be a candy manufacturing plant nearby. seriously....i thought i
had a leaking cooling system until i found that there's some candy factory
nearby and each time i drive by there in my other cars i smell coolant.

nope not at all, besides the sitting in traffic for an hour.

was your fan running? your engine may be overheating. if your head gasket blows you can leak coolant from the overflow tank but i wouldnt think it would be that. check your fan, it may not be switching on or blew a fuse or something.
