Steering Wheel Vibrates at 65 or Over

Hi there. I just bought a used 2007 Honda Fit Sport and the steering wheel is vibrating heavily when I drive 65 mph or over. Does anyone know why this is? Do all the Fit Sport's steering wheels vibrate at higher speed?

I am coming from a 2001 Toyota Echo, so I'm used to some rattling and some vibrating. But the way this steering wheel vibrates, I'm not sure I can tolerate it for anything more than a 30 minute drive on the freeway.

check that your tires are balanced correctly and get an alignment

Check those front tires, they are probably in need of replacement. If not, try the tie rods. How many miles on the car?

I have a 08 Fit and 09 Fit. Neither steering wheel vibrates up to maximum I've driven, over 85 mph. Seriously, have that front end checked out by Midas or some other alignment shop... you don't want to kill yourself with a bad ball joint or tie rod.

You need to have your wheels balanced.

You might need new rotors or at least have them turned. Either way, it should be an easy fix.

Not true. My 1991 Toyota 4x4 was notorious for eating up rotors and the wheel would shimmy when just driving down the road. Granted it was definitely worse when applying the brakes but the OP didn't give much detail other than the wheel shimmies.

First check your pressures. You may just have some different pressures, not enough to throw the TPMS light but enough that at 65mph the rotation is causing some shimmy.

If the pressures are good, check the tires to make sure they both the same brand, type, and size and are worn the same (some people replace one tire if they get a flat and the tires will have worn differently)

Then see if one side has wheel weights and the other doesn't. Those weights can get thrown off after a bunch of miles.

Lastly have your alignment checked/adjusted. The Toe can walk out after a bunch of miles, pot holes, etc., and can cause some shimmy, although Toe is usually not quite so speed dependent.

yes, it is a safety device so you drive under the speed limit.

get your front tires balanced.

Take the car into Walmart, or any tire place, and have them RE-BALANCE the wheels.

This same thing just happened to me. (orig owner must have never had them re-balanced)
I just bought a 2009 Fit w/ 33,000 miles on it and when I went over 70mph the steering wheel (front end) would vibrate in a noticeably unpleasant way.

Spent $30 on 4 wheel re-balance (lifetime) at walmart and she drives just fine now - no vibration anymore.
BEWARE-do not get suckered into buying new tires (if you really don't need them yet) when you describe the problem to tire dept guys they well try to sell you new tires (but its really just a balance issue).

Figure I can get another 7000 miles out of these OEM tires then Im going to put some Continental Eco-plus LRR tires on for max fuel economy & tire life.

confirmed. my m3 had a stuck caliper that warped the rotor. it would start shaking about 15 minutes into a ride (at any speed), right around when it heated up

check balance/tires, then rods/joints, then brakes
