How to protect foglights from breaking?

I have a 2009 Fit Sport (manual).

In 2011, during a long drive (about 250 miles), the glass on my left foglight broke. The light itself still worked but the glass itself on the outside was broken I'm not sure when or exactly how this happened. I've never been in any accident of any sort, nor have I run over things.

I'm finally getting the foglight replaced on Wednesday. I was wondering if there was something I could get/do to protect my foglights from damage? My father has a Subaru with foglights but they seem to have a little "cage" over them. The Fit's foglights are not only exposed, but are very close to the ground.

I saw there are some protective "covers" for them, like a thin film I could put on them, but I don't know if this will do anything to stop potential damage.

So the Headlight Armor film actually will work? I'm just curious as to how a tiny film can help stop breakage. But if it really does work, I guess I'll put it on.

The same way some of those film products protect iPads and the front ends of cars (clear bras.) The headlight armor stuff is thick. Not like a sticker. I'd say more like half the thickness of a credit card. Mine have definitely been hit by rocks, because I can see it in the film, and no breakage. If you search, you'll find that this is a problem on the GE, as they are glass, and expensive to replace. Haven't heard of anyone cracking theirs with film in place. There is cheaper stuff on ebay you can cut out, but I'd recommend the thicker stuff.

I've got a clear film on my foglights too, and my foglights haven't seen any damage yet. Could just be luck though, I don't know.

I took mine out and placed a bit of left over gutter guard in each assembly...

Thanks guys. I looked at the Headlight Armor site and I see that I can get clear foglight protectors for my 09 Fit for about $15. Not bad. I will take your advice and get some. I am getting the foglight repaired on Wednesday so I'll order the films now and put them on myself once it's repaired.

Ker1989 I'm curious as to what the replacement cost for a fog light is. Are you having a dealership do it or are you going to install the new lens yourself?

There are NO lenses being sold for Fit fog lights. So no repair of broken lenses is available. You either replace the whole fog light, or make plastic lenses yourself.

My insurance paid for mine under glass breakage. It might be worth a try.
