Great Dog Car

Great Dog Car
A few weeks ago I bought a 2010 Storm Silver Metallic manual Fit after much consideration, having decided it was the best marriage of fuel efficiency and capacity for three large dogs, boyfriend and me for all the hiking and camping trips we go on.
I know Subaru is marketing to all the dog lovers but I think we made a swell choice!
My senior shepherd is maybe not quite as comfy as he was sprawled in the back of my old Dodge Caravan, but I think he feels safe in the hatch while the younger kids hang their heads out the back windows. And we've been getting 37+ once we get up to speed! I wrote a blog post all about it:
Peaceful dog: All Dogs Aboard the Honda Fit
Anyone else get a Fit for its dog capacity?

Lucky you sounds like they are having fun. I am not that brave with my dog, he is a one year old pitbull with incredible strength and hyper attitude. He is obedient but he needs to travel in a large kennel. And those kennels almost fit in my gd3.....lol just about the only thing I have not been able to squeeze in there is that.

I have two small Kairn Terriers and they love to sit on the floor with the magic seats raised. I pad the whole area with a large quilt and they are write comfy. Funny thing, when they jump in, each one always goes their same spot. (Male always sits on the left, female always on the right)

Lol my dogs love car rides as well. I got a chihuahua and Pomeranian. Both sit everywhere in the car but my chihuahua loves to sit on my lap and look outside the window. Once I fix my magic seat on my driver's side I will bring the seat down for both of them to lounge.

My wife has a Subaru Impreza wagon and it is fantastic for camping with our dogs. But you know what I think is going to be better? My new Fit.
One of the major reasons I bought the Fit was its versatility, and the fact that one of my two dogs is getting up there in age, so getting her out of the back seat of my beetle was becoming an issue. I'm one of those people who has buyer's remorse any time i spend more than ten dollars on something, but the first time i took my pups to the pet store in the Fit, I considered every dime well spent. They LOVE that car, which just made me love it all that much more.

I didn't get my Fit for the dog but he's small enough to be comfortable in a Fiat 500!
But then I befriended a new coworker and soon realized we both like dogs so we made a date to take them to the park to run around and meet each other. Much to our surprise, we also drove the same car.

I have a Lab mix that loooooves car rides. He's a small dude (~35lb) so he has a ton of room to roam around.
I had a bunch of BMWs before the Fit and the center console held all the power window switches so I never had any problems with him opening the windows. First time I opened the window for him to stick his head out in the Fit, he steps on the window switch and puts it all the way down...got well acquainted with the window lock switch after that incident.
Only bad part is trying to keep the interior clean. We go to the park to hike almost every day and mud at this time of year is brutal.

I just purchased a Fit Sport today and one of the reasons was for it's configuration properties and how they serve pet companion mobility. My 60 pound pooch has been "riding" in a Jeep Wrangler his whole life (he drove us home from the pound) and when I saw the back of the Fit in cargo mode I recognized a great ride for Rudy. I'll be crafting a large padded insert to fill the seat-down space to protect the interior of the car.
I chose the Fit for a number of reasons and it's suitability for my hairy partner was one of my priorities.

I have two 60lb Pit Bulls in my 2012 and they fit great. I fold my back seat down and they have plenty of room. Another nice feature is the low height or "step in" for my 13 year boy dog. Makes it much easier for him to jump in.

I'm pretty sure I can't upload photos yet but I'll chat it up for a bit and then when I can, load the pix of my "DogPod" modification for the back of my Fit. It protects the interior from damage and easily removes in about 3 minutes. I made it for well under $200.
