Red face Miles vs kilometers

Hi all,

In Canada, we have a metric mesuring system and I was wondering if my onboard computer of my 2013 Fit knows the difference between miles and kilometers when it comes to maintenance, more specifically the Oil Change INDEX.

Reading most posts, I see that most oil changes occur at 5000 miles or so yet I have to change my oil at 5000 KM (as per the computer). Can this be ? Am I getting shafted somehow ? What are your thoughts on this....

Thanks for your response,

Glenn

There's a good chance you're getting colder starts and much longer warmup times than I'm getting down here in subtropical New Hampshire.

Maybe you are getting screwed by Honda Canada, but shorter oil change intervals up where less of your run time is at full temp isn't all that surprising.

If your speed is in clicks then your mileage minder is as well. Does seem unusual that you would be down to 10-15% oil life remaining at 5,000 though. I go closer to 10,000.

It shouldn't matter. There is only two ways in the manuals. The first if you drive aggressive and short trips you should change the oil every 5 km. If you dive at least 8 km and in a fashion way you should change it every 10 km.
That's what's the Mexican manual says and we also use international metric system.

Hope it helps.

I guess the dealership is trying to get money. Kine told me to go every 5 km. But I trust more the manual. With the manual services done in the you still get warranty.

The maintenance minder doesn't directly consider milage at all, so far as I know. It bases its oil life on things like the number of cold starts, the engine run time and RPMs, and so forth, which are really more accurate than how far the tires have moved.

Short trips and cold starts are very hard on the oil (and the engine in general), while long highway trips are comparatively easy on it.

I'm also Canadian. My first oil change was at 4,000km. My next change was about 9,000km later, and I've been fairly consistent since.

Summers here are hot, winters are cold. Most of my driving is in stop and go traffic, although there are a few highway trips thrown in.

Most of the Americans that I see posting are going upwards of 10,000 miles between changes (16,000km). Their cities are much better laid out, though, and I would hazard a guess that traffic flows better.

From what I've seen on the forums over the past few years that I've been here, mileage varies (between oil changes). Yours will, too.

Wow, on my 2014 GE, I'm at 20% oil life and about 12500 km!!

Had the car since late June and I'm still waiting to have my first oil change...

It seems strange that the CDM Fits appear to need their oil changed more often, that just doesn't sound right. I have about 1900 miles (approx. 3000km) on my Fit (all cold weather driving) and Oil Life is at 80%, so I'm curious to see how long before my first oil change.

I can't speak for the OP. For me, two things kill my oil life. In Saskatchewan, our temperatures don't climb above freezing for five months of the year. We'll get the odd day here and there, but most of the time from November to March, we're below freezing. The second is that most of my driving is city driving. I put 9,000km (5,500 miles) on my car in a year, and traffic in my city does not flow well, so I go two or three blocks, then stop, then go another two or three blocks, then stop. Both of these factors are hard on oil life, so I have to change mine more frequently. I find that my oil life drops 10% per 1,000km (625 miles). Since I'm supposed to change it every year, even if I haven't reached 15%, it works out well for me.

That's better than I get (as per my above post). You must be in a warmer climate, and I'd guess most of your driving is highway driving?

All of a sudden, Wisconsin is looking more and more like a tropical paradise. Below freezing from November to March in Canada?.......ouch!

He is north west of you.

Here in balmy South of Canada it was above freezing the second week of Jan. Had not been since. It was -25 C this morning. The Fit is getting use to it as it started. Last week it failed twice. I kicked 20-30 lbs of ice from the wheel wells this morning.

It's been -20°C for the last 2 months here...even a bit more!

But yeah, most of my driving is highway driving, so I think this would be making the difference.

Yeah, Saskatchewan got lonely in the deep freeze, so we sent some cold weather to you. Hope you're enjoying it!

And, no, we do NOT want it back. You can keep it! Oh, wait... We've got our own cold weather.
