Buying a car from an out of province dealer?
Hey guys,
I'm still rollin in the Fit, but I've decided on what car I am looking to replace the Fit with.
I'm currently in talks with a private dealership in Surrey, B.C. on a 2005 G35 coupe 6MT in Ivory Pearl White (been hard to find this color)...
My question is have any of you experience buying a car that is almost 1000kms away? What should I do in terms of making sure I don't buy a lemon?
I am going to trade my Fit in to them, and if the numbers work out right I have 3 options.
I'm just waiting to hear back from them today to see if they can meet what I want to deal with in terms of money... its such a nice car, I test drove a local 05 G35 coupe last weekend and just loved it.
2005 G35 Coupe Sport Package, 6 spd manual, 19" forged oem wheels, ivory pearl white, beige leather interior, low mileage and absolutely mint (no mods). 3.5L V6 - 298hp - 260 lb ft.

- Fly out there, check it out and then fly back and they can ship the car out to an affilate here in Calgary and I can close the deal there.
- Drive out there in the Fit, check it out, and if all is good, drive home in the G35.
- Don't see the car, make the deal, have them ship it out here, and they will ship the Fit back.

Nice car man!!
Be wary of Vancouver dealers; Some of the ones along Kingsway are really sketchy!
Get a carfax report on on the Vin to ensure it wasn't stolen or had a police damage sticker removed. Another big one (Especially in BC) is check to make sure there are no outstanding leans against the car.
When you get down there make sure the Vin matches and hasn't been replaced!
It has to pass the out of province inspection as well when you get back which is always a pain; double check everything will go smoothly with your insurance company too!
If it was me I would drive down, check out the car and if everything checks out then do the sale. That way if things arn't exactly as you expect you can still walk away.
I think the way PST works is wherever the transaction takes place (within Alberta or BC) is how they justify where they charge PST. So no refund... just like the PST on gas or food you buy when you are in BC. BUT; I think you don't have to pay PST if you have the car delivered to Alberta. The dealer can usually do something about that with a little tricky paper work.

egads Yeefit..I cringed when reading your post.
Mercury is retrograde and this is generally NOT a good time to buy a car. (yeah, I'm an astrologer by hobby)
Many folks end up with lemons and/or a stalling factor with paperwork and things don't go smoothly with travel.
Obviously you're not likely to listen to me about this but please pay attention to what 'Sugarphreak' had to say.

Seriously though I would not buy without seeing it and if you are serious I would drive down, do the deal and drive back in the new car.
With that sais you will get raped on your trade in value ESPECIALLY if they know you are that serious and want to seal the deal right then and there.
What package is the one you are looking at? Also for PST you will likely have to pay it there and I think you can submit some paperwork after the fact proving you are registering the car in Alberta and have a residence here and it would be paid back but who knows how long that could take and I am not 100% on this.
You won't mod this one right?

Hahaha... u should know better that I will end up modding it. Just little things tho.. no turbo this time around.
I am going to do the G35 coupe cause I can for now.. we might be starting a family in the next 2-3 years so I might as well have fun with a coupe while I still can!
Agreed on the trade-in value, but it saves a lot of hassle selling privately.. I gave them a dollar amount as to where I want the deal to go, if they can't meet it then oh well.. the search will continue!

I just spoke with their business manager, and he said that all their cars are inspected by BCAA and fully certified by them. They are associated with AMA here in Calgary which is nice since I have my home/auto insurance through them.
Also, he said that I would only be charged my provincal GST, they will fill out a form on the date of sale that will negate the B.C. PST since I am registering the vehicle in Alberta.
So far they seem very cooperative and helpful.. we'll see how well they can back up their talk with the dollar amount!

I just spoke with the sales rep... I am looking at 10,500 ontop of my trade-in for the G35. The car is listed at 26,987.00. When looking at this, 10,500 including all fees and taxes sounds like a pretty good deal.
Does it sound too good to be true? I've placed a refundable deposit on the car to hold it til I can decide if its the right deal... I may be making a road trip out to Surrey this weekend if it is....

If that works for you then go for it but you could probably get another 3g's for your car by selling privately. They will turn around and flip it for 15k. I used to sell at Kramer in town a few years ago so I know how this stuff works. If 10.5 works for you get something faxed to you stating they will give you this value for the car and have it signed by the Sales Manager so they can't back out of that when you show up to finish the deal.
I would honestly look at 11000 to 11500 if I were you.

actually its not 10,500 for the Fit, its more like 16,500 for the Fit. I would only owe them 10,500 after the trade-in. Since the car is listed at 26,980, and they are asking that I finance 10,500 after the trade, that means they are giving me closer to 16,480. or you can just take 3k off the listed price and 3k off of the Fit, making it 13,480 for the Fit, and 23,980 for the G35.
Thats why i think its too good of a deal.

I'd stay away from that deal! Just my opinion but I've been in the business for almost 11 years and I lived in Vancouver for 8 years...no way I'd buy a car from Surrey. PM me and I'll hook you up with a friend (used car manager@infiniti) and he'll get you what you want.
