2200 rpm at 60 is also OK.

If I drive around keeping rpms at 2000 or lower and be gentle on the throttle I think I can get about 30 mpg with mostly highway driving. I did it a little and checked. I got about 28.2 miles on a little less than 0.9 gallons.

It's pretty hard to do and it takes all the fun out of driving but in times of high gas prices it might work.

The other idea I have is to replace the 195/55-15 tires with something more narrow

185/60-15. Good example is Ultra High Perf All Season-
Falken Ziex Ze-912 $56 each 480 treadwear 17.5 lbs each
Fits rims 5-6.5" wide, 23.9" tire diameter slightly tall so less wheel gap.

For this tire it's 3 lbs less than the stock size and 1/2" taller.
60 series sidewall is more comfortable. Handling should be OK.

Thanks for the useful information. I was actually looking maybe 16" with 55 so it would be a little taller and lighter. But, your way is cheaper and the stock rims aren't bad lookin.

You know when I just got my Fit I drove the first thousand miles keeping the tach near 2k- 2.5k and I got only 28 - 30 mpg. I don't know if the engine wasn't broken in or that rpm range was bad for good mpg. Now, that I keep it near 3k my milage is way better. I notice at that rpm range the engine has enough torque for any upcoming hill and I'm just barely on the gas.

I had an A/T for about 2 months (w/ the SSI and Tanabe axle-back) and averaged around 28 MPGs with 70/30 (highway/city) driving.

I then traded-in for a M/T and have been getting these MPGs (also w/ the same SSI and Tanabe axle-back...and same 70/30 hw/city driving):

Prior to installing the Weapon R header...my MPGs were:
31.2
32.5
31.5
30.8
After installing Weapon R header...my 1st fill-up was 34.8 MPGs.

I normally try to shift around 3K.

Aurite,

finally some back up data, my last tank I got 32 mph but, I was on the gas a
lot, had a party on the top of Makakilo with family on board 4.5k third gear up to the top. Forth gear would struggle at around 3k. but 32 is still 3 miles better than my worst at 29.

Two years later and I still get between 35-37 on a regular basis with my 5MT base.

My driving consists of 1/3 canyon twisties, 1/3 country roads and 1/3 normal stop/go traffic.

I have installed a scangauge 2 and it really helps train the right foot to ease up on the gas pedal when cruising. You'll be amazed what a slight difference in pedal pressure makes in gas mileage. The Fit is very sensitive to throttle position in relation to gas mileage.

It is my belief that the AT cars have a hard time getting decent mileage due to the ratios in the trans. I think they made the gearing shorter in the bottom gears to give it a sportier feel at the expense of mileage. If you spend a lot of time in traffic with these cars, I could see how that would hurt the numbers.

AT might offer a sporty ride but only if you "Stomp" on the gas.
If you drive gently you get poor mpg and poor performance with the AT.
That's junk.

With MT you get more fun driving, better performance and better mpg with less initial cost but you'll have to shift in traffic.

Just a thought. Gas in Hawaii is at least 10% ethanol and I wonder how much that might affect the AT Fit- doesn't seem to affect the MT Fit much.

Just got a Scan Gauge II. Will be checking mpg at various speeds and rpms.
More later.

Easy to use, just plug it into the OBDII connector.
Set the engine size, gasoline vs diesel, size of gas tank.

Then go-----
And watch the display (you can set the color of the display by adjusting red, blue and green tint from 0-3 for each).

Some early data from Scan Guide II

In lower gears from a stop- mostly 3 to 11 mpg to matter how easy you are on the throttle.

Anytime you can ease off the throttle you get about 50+ mpg and if you coast you get 140 to 9999 mpg.

At 2000 rpm about 50-55 mph on flat roads at constant even speed and throttle you can get about 45 to 50 mpg.

Any hills or get on the gas and mpg drops to about 21 to 28 mpg.

So it seems the highway driving is OK but the slower urban and heavy traffic driving simply kills mpg.

Short trips on surface roads expect about 20-22 mpg.
Any highway traffic non rush hour and you get about 30 mpg.

My daughter took a drive from San Jose to Lake tahoe and averaged 35 mpg going there and 39 mpg coming back. Light traffic at night going up and sunday afternoon coming home.

I took the scan gauge II and put it in my automatic Civic EX sedan.

Going up the same hill on H2

At 55 mph and less than 2000 rpm using cruise control

During downshifts in the steep areas got about 18-20 mpg
and during modest inclines more like 28-30+ mpg.

Both of these were much better mpg than the Fit on the same stretches.

Shows that AT can work but the gearing on the Fit isn't so good for mpg or maybe the engine isn't efficient pulling loads uphill.

All tests done with 2 people in the car.

The Civic got 37.5 mpg total going 15 miles from near the airport to Mililani. Up until the hilly part, I was getting 44 mpg average for the flat highway stretch.

Fit Sport AT on Oahu.

Recently, I'm driving like a grandma and am getting 35mpg.

Upon first getting the car, I averaged 32-33mpg. As the luster of the new car wore off, I started to drive it harder, play with the paddle shifters, etc and mpg went down to 29-31. But with gas prices going up, I wanted to prove to myself that my purchase of the fit was worth it...so I'm accelerating really slow, driving 50 on the freeways, etc...and am getting 35mpg. So it is possible to get this kind of mileage in Hawaii with an AT.

So if you see a fit driving slowly on the freeway...its probably me. Don't worry, I make sure to stay in the far right lane.

Hey where did you get the scanguage from? I was under the impression that it was a difficult install... If it's just plugging into your OBDII port and hiding the wiring - I think I'd get one. How much was it and where from?
Thanks!

I drive from Royal Kunia to Kaneohe almost daily on my way to work. I average 31-32MPG. I leave the house at 530am to TRY to miss traffic on the way to H3... Coming home at about 3-4pm it's a crap shoot if there's going to be any traffic.

I think I may do more research on the scan-gauge II - maybe it can save me some moolah with all this freakin' gas prices...

My opinion - the engine in the fit needs to be slightly larger displacement or the gearing in the auto-trans needs to be more fuel efficient. The 1.5L is trying too hard to pull uphills where a 1.8 or 2.0 would easily cope with it...

You can get it from ScanGaugeII - Trip Computers + Digital Gauges + Scan Tool. Shipping is included. It was $169.95 total.

It's simple to install. Just like you said...plug it into the OBDII port and perform the setup. I forget exactly what u enter in the setup (tank size, octane...).

Important Note: Plug the SG in when your car is turned on. I got a CEL light when I first installed mine. This happens if you connect the SG when the car is off. The CEL eventually turned off, but I was kinda bummed until it did. That's what I get for being impatient & not following the directions more closely.
