Wanna Autocross? Aloha Stadium Hawaii
Waiting at the start of the Test and tune day.
Stock wheels and tires.

Those stock tires didn't do that well and handling wasn't crisp. I'd say avoid autocross with stock tires if you can.

Cruising alone with Kumho V710 205/50-15 R compound tires and stock sized 15x6 Sport Edition D4 rims +50 offset.
I tired but could not beat the first in H-stock Toyota Corolla running on Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R tires, he's been getting 2nd place all season and got 34.784 seconds best run. 47th raw time, 20th overall with handicap for class.
I finished 2nd out of 7 in class with best run at 35.814 seconds, 67th out of 102 raw times and 32nd with handicap (PAX) for the day. The Fit handled well enough but I needed much more power for the course that event. Auto transmission wasn't working for me. It was fun to drive.
Our places overall were helped by wet weather in the first heat which slowed the faster cars in that session by 1 to 2 seconds.

The Fit is fun to drive at autocross. Just needs a manual transmission and about 25 more HP.

Hi Brad,
08FitSport, myself, and my little nephew went to check out the SCCA Event @ the Aloha Stadium today. We got to watch the 9:30 and 12:30 heats. This was the 1st SCCA Event I've been to. It was interesting seeing the varying cars (makes, mods, & setups) tearing around the track....& comparing their lap times. Didn't see any Fits though. We tried to look for you, but no luck. Anyways, it was a pretty cool experience.

Next time if you come by you can ask for me at the sign in gate. I don't have the Fit to drive, it's just not competitive. So I have to fall back on my old car a MINI.

Check out Street Modified (SM) class.
Here are the results-

Next event is sunday April 13th same format.
Race #2 - April 13
Heat 1: All Stock
Heat 2: All Street Prepared & EM
Heat 3: All Street Modified & DM
Heat 4: All Street Touring & Prepared

If you come by at the end of the day about 330pm I can take you out as a passenger- wear shoes. Riders must be at least 14 years old. No slippers or sandals.
I will drive in heat 3 after lunch on April 13.
I was driving in heat 4 at the end of the day yesterday.
I wasn't able to make the most of the course and mostly took the turns too fast leading to massive understeer and lost time. Just trying to go too fast and it cost me.
In the fun runs I changed to street tires and managed a 39.97 second run with a passenger. With R compound tires that would have translated to about 37.9 seconds are would have been much better. The car probably could have done 37.4 with more skill.
Try to come to the April 13 event since the next one after that is July 13.
Think about driving your Fit. Street tires are ok, runs are only 40 seconds and go by very quickly.

Congratulations on your class win. Raton and I were there from the beginning. Sorry we left before your heat. We were hoping to see the BOM Fit smoke the HS class, that corolla looked wicked fast for all stock though.
What are the different classes? Does all stock mean no mods at all. (intake, headers, frame stiffeners etc.) Can anyone just do time trials at the end?
Howzit MINI-Fit,

There are many classes-
Stock classes from Super Stock like corvettes, porsche GT3 and Lotus Elise down to normal sedans in H-stock.
Street Touring classes for 4 seat and 2 seaters based on engine size and limited to running street tires. The best example was the RX8 silver with body kit running in Street Touring Unlimited, he got 38.89 seconds good for 15th overall.
There there are Street Performance classes- like B Street performance featuring Datsun 240 Zs (including the best time of the day), Honda S2000s and BMW M3s. C Street Performance with Toyota MR2s and M3s and a whole bunch of drivers in D Street Performance.
Prepared and modified classes allow for more engine and body changes and are not always street legal, more track cars or highly modified.
Street Modified- any increase boost or engine swap with 4 seats
Street Modified 2 for similar with 2 seats.
Generally 2 seat cars don't compete against 4 seat cars.
Trucks fall in various classes.
Stock class doesn't mean all stock- you can still-
use any drop in air filter
change plugs or spark plug wires, engine oil
do any alignment
add crash bolts to help alignment
use any cat back exhaust
any front anti-roll bar
any tires that fit on stock wheels including R compound tires
any rollbar
any harness system
any brake pads or brake pad fluid
remove anything that is not fastened down- mats, spare tire, tool kit, hub covers, cargo security cover, etc.
At the end of the day are fun runs, all drivers with cars driven in that event can drive for $1 per run. If you did not drive you cannot drive in fun runs and you need to use a car that ran that event (since it was tech inspected for safety). You can ride along with a driver if you have shoes and a helmet and you are at least 14 years old. Only one passenger per car.
112 cars at the last event.
Some examples-

MG Midget (100 HP) in G- Prepared class

1994 Porsche 996 GT3 with race tires (Hoosier) in Super Stock class

Lotus Elise with stock tires in Super Stock class (his boss owns the car)

Small but fast FSAE racer in B- Modified class (got 4th fastest raw time) driven by three UH engineering students.

Datsun 240Z with race rubber (2nd fastest raw time) in Street Mod 2 class

2006 Miata with 18" wheels and Kumho V710s in Street Mod 2 class (3rd fastest raw time)

To all Hawaii Fits, come out it's fun in the sun but, if you plan to spend the day bring a supa big hat and a lot of sunscreen. There no where to hide from the sun unless you bring a tent. Spectators have a shaded area but, got to kapu a spot early on.

Raton,
Thanks to Ken for the pictures. Excellent job! You can see Tom's nearly riding on the front rims in some of the hardest turns. More air needed!
From our fun runs you can tell that to cut times you have to really be pushing your car at the limit at all times and nearly on the brink of loosing control but still drive as cleanly through the course.
One good driver said you have to drive like a "madman".
Skill is a big factor, in the 240Z that got Fastest time of the day, Curtis drives with his daughter and wife and their times are separated by about 1 or 2 seconds each. Same car, same ideas on how to drive but different abilities and levels of courage to drive as cleanly as possible.
Right now in Hawaii Region the competition is very keen with about 7 to 10 drivers are are always at the top.
In the beginning new drivers will always have a hard time matching the experienced drivers. Most of the time it's because the novice drivers are on street tires which are usually All Season. Switching to any of the Extreme Performance Summer tires (check out the newest due out soon- Kumho XS or Bridgestone Potenza RE-11) helps nearly as much as R compound tires (and are legal for Street Touring classes).
We expect that in January or Feb of 2009 we will be getting a date to do practice autocrossing for a day. It's called test and tune and we will have instructors allday and you get in about 15 to 20 runs. Usually there are 5 or 6 time periods and you work one and drive in the others. You can stay part or all of the day. The times are recorded but they are not counted as an official event.
Street Touring S is a good class for the Fit with upgraded wheels but the missing link would be good sticky tires. Save the All Seasons for the street.
No R compounds but plenty of great street tires are possible that will work with the Fit.

Thank you!!!, Randy and Ken for the pics can't wait till next time.
Man my front tire looks flat with 32 #s of air. It took 48 #s to raise it to match the rears and put 42 #s in the rear for more roll. Federal 595 are so soft maybe that's what drifting tires are supposed to do. Checked the Federal site it states 36 #s max. I hope I don't get a blow out.
Raton's next, whoop whoop. August 31, be there!!!!

Oh man! The August 31 autocross was so much fun!!!
It was really great to "unleash" the Fit and see how it handles on the autocross course.
I was really surprised! It handled the turns and slaloms pretty well. It was 2nd gear through most of the course. The acceleration felt pretty decent to me, a 1st-time autocrosser.
It was funny...prior to my 1st run (of 4) I just wanted to complete the course w/o killing too much cones and not flipping my car. haha. After that, it was fun trying to push it more and more. It was great to have Brad in the car for the 1st three runs advising where to get on the throttle and how to take certain turns and curves. Thanks Brad!! Much mahalos!!
08FitSport (Tom) and I were the two Fits that ran yesterday. Thanks for the support Tom!
Again, it was a blast!!
Hawaii FitFreaks...you should give it a try.
Here's info from the SCCA HI web-site (Welcome to SCCA Hawaii Region Web). From what I understand the "Test & Tune" event is a good time to get more in-depth driver instruction & allot of practice runs. The following are new event dates (all Sundays):
