....................
For SmurFit here is the post from robwahoo (admin) earlier in the thread. You need 50 posts before you can receive your rep. I highlighted it in Red for ya.

hey wait a minute here another March-er who is going to be "famous soon enough"
CRAP! i think this is my third post in a row....
Abuse, plain and simple
This thread has officially destroyed the "rep" system's credibility. It is gone forever, thanks to its abuse in THIS thread.
I feel like I was at a really cool car show and somehow wandered into the child-care area.
Sorry to see this happen. It's worse than a troll, in that it's come from our own community.
The people whose credibility it has hurt are the ones who have been the most helpful. KoolKevin, for instance, has gone way above the call of duty to help people with his "How-To's", and now any joker with a cohort can out-rep his well-deserved points. This has only cheapened the system.
In retrospect, it seems to me that rep points should never have been enabled in the off-topic area. That's like having a good reputation at the strip club.
Damn.

Really? You are saying that the people who have separated themselves by obtaining rep, whether through this thread or not, do not deserve their status? I look at the first page of people that are listed by rep points and I see people that provide a lot to this forum and for the most part I would say that the system is right on track. There are always going to be exceptions so please don't start calling out people who don't belong. And I agree that passing out rep to get rep is messed up, but so far, in my opinion, the system hasn't failed. It has just been sped up a bit.
Also, I can get on board for not being able to rep off-topic posts.

I am not saying that everyone with lots of rep is undeserving. I am saying that their deserved rep is cheapened by the "rep-me-and-I'll-rep-you" type of crap. It has made the deserved reputation look less credible by overrunning it with the meritless "buttbuddies" reputation.
In every profession, there eventually forms a "mutual admiration society", where the awards are given out. This is where the profession usually meets its downfall and becomes a backslapping festival instead of getting things done.

The rep system has obviously turned into more of a fun thing more then anything. But its not like people who do write ups great DIY's, and do great things around the forum wont get rep. If anything they will get MORE rep then before this thread. Due to the fact of how much more popular rep has become over the last two months, new members and pretty much everybody who wants to understand how to rep, and what rep is can and will find out. Probaly resulting in them repping other posts and posters that they enjoy.
The bottom line is we are in the off topic section, people want to have fun with the system and we dont mind.
Happy posting!
Tyler
I agree 100% with what Steeldog posted. The system as it now stands should be re-named "How many buddies do you have points" it has nothing to do with rep. And Kevin is a good example he wrote some great DIYs and should be rewarded for them much more than someone who posts "I'm short today who's turn is it to give me some", and the people that contact some one else to let him know XXX needs a few can you give him some?
For nothing other than fooling around with the system.
You guys bitch about how lame other sites are and you never go there anymore but guess what you guys are doing the same to FITFREAK turning it into a lame site. Some of you knew what was going to happen and posted "I hope this doesn't get out of hand and get the whole system closed down" you knew what was going on, told us all about what a lame system it is on other sites where members have a bazillion points and DOTS, and predicted what would happen but did anyone step up and say whoa this is really getting way overboard NOPE now we have the same lame system you predicted.
The whole system needs to be disabled, everyone set back to ZERO, RULES formed and promulgated, Then start over again with rules. As it stands now it's a kids game nothing to do with REP.

Chill out! You guys are defending a system that will award you by doing nothing more than existing. You don't even need to post! If you post every now and then you get rep for that too. Eventually everyone would have the same rep anyway, so what's the difference?
BTW: I have gotten FAR more rep from my exhaust clip thread than I have gotten from this thread. As far as that goes the system still works, but maybe the "wrong" crowd is visiting those other how-to's and DIY's. Maybe the people that look at them are just not repping the OP.
I understand what everyone is saying with the rep getting out of control. To be honest with you if the system was shut down i wouldnt be all that upset. I enjoy it and all but yes it kinda is losing its purpose. I wanted to get the system mainstream so that everyone would start using it and there fore give the people that actually deserve it credit because yes people like kevin who did great DIYs really didnt get much. I also think that mods should be defaulted to 10 like admin and everyone else should have to fight for there own. I have earned alot from figuring out the system and for making a new thread in the newbie section that completely describes the system so new users can understand and use it. I dont think that i have done all that bad thus far. I know that not all of those were from all my work to teach about the rep system but as long as the majority were earned a couple free bee's arent gonna hurt anybody. Thats my thoughts. comments and complaints always welcome
I feel that my reps have been acquired through many posts not in the off-topic area that have been very useful
my hvac DIY thread...for one there is more than one person who knows how to change their cars themselves---
and more than one person to share there knowledge and insight
Reps still show the most active members who obviously are appreciated by other members. If u feel rep should only be given out when some1 tells you how to screwing a light bulb than be it- when u feel u agree with someone politically and want to rep go for it. When u think someone made a good point about an issue and u agree rep them--
The button says:
if u like the post, rep it...
(or something like that) on my phone so going from memory...
There is no rule what the post must be about
If u honestly don't like my post then neg. rep it...
but be aware u better have a reason-- behind ANY reps pos and neg
