Whaa whaa post a negative get a negative. Proves that the system works both ways because there are no rules so there can be no abuse of the system.

Does anyone actually take "Rep Points" in account when looking at posts?

...seriously. This is a real question, not joking. Just looking for opinions.

Abusing the rep system can happen, especially if it violates the first two rules of the forum

"1) Please respect each other. No Personal Attacks on another member. This includes the use of profanity towards another user.

2) Do Not Harass another member."

Though I can imagine that abusing the rep system would be more connected with harassment (2) than with anything else.

Just my $0.02.

Those are generic rules that are 100% applicable through interpretation. Depending on what kind of a mood someone is in, they can take things the wrong way or even compile things that make it seem as if another member is singling them out. What it boils down to is the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If someone cries enough about any thing/body they can get the said person in "trouble".

RE: Abuse
As far as abuse goes (in terms of the rep system), you are again dealing with a system based on interpretation and opinion. There is no WRONG opinion, nor is there a perfectly correct opinion. There are many shades that make abuse impossible. The only abuse is favoritism, BUT the limits are in place (ie spread the rep/20 rep limit) to keep that to a minimum. Furthermore, if you are playing favorites it is usually for good reason.

EXAMPLE:

subject A - gives advise in 10 words or less, and is always correct, but is short with the answers and does not re-visit the thread to confirm the situation

subject B - gives advise on occasion, and is mostly right, but does so very descriptively and makes sure to follow up on the advised party to be sure things went well and offer further assistance if needed.

Who do you think will get the rep/friendship/trust? The person that is ALWAYS right, or the person that offers the absolute Best advise that they can give?

If this happens on a regular basis you will grow to value that person's opinion more than that of the guy that does quick bursts of info that are practically useless to most of the viewers/subscribers. That is called favoritism (or abuse in some circles).

IDK. I guess I was curious if the Rep system Actually meant anything to anybody (other than a source of entertainment). It sort of does to me. I usually rep the people that i feel are most helpful, un-appreciated, or are able to take a joke [that goes a long way with me]...I guess I abuse the system by playing favorites.

Nope I was "advised" by one of the former site owners that now is in admin that because there are no rules and this is an "open" site I would not get a review of the neg rep I got and members are free to do what they want and that includes neg rep FOR ANY REASON they want to give one. No harassment.

So then how is it possible for you to keep complaining how we are "abusing" the system, if you are sitting here doing the same thing only with neg rep?

Tyler
