Groaning / Squeaking / Screeching noise from LR wheel???

What could this be?

It all started about a week ago. Whenever I turned in one direction
(can't remember if it was right or left) the left rear wheel would
squeek (sounded like it was once per revolution, *squeak* *squeak*
*squeak* faster or slower depending on my speed.

Now, for the last 2 days, the wheel squeaks or groans in any direction.
At low speeds, especially while reversing, it sounds like a major
groan. (like a submarine close to buckleing under metal fatigue from
extreme pressure in the movies) rrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Speeding up, it becomes a screeching or squeaking.

One more thing, not sure if it is related. I had a look at all the
rotors and it seems that in the effected area, there is about a quarter
to a half inch what isn't warn on the outside of the rotor and instead
of the nice shiny metal look, there is some rust. On all my other
rotors, there appears to be clean metal (where the pads contact) right
to the edge of the outside of the rotor.

Any ideas? I'm hoping part of the break pad is screwed up and that's
it. Thanks,

Rob

Sounds more like busted boots on the CV joints. Did you check the boots?

could be 2 things that I can think of.

1. Your brake pads are worn out and the squealer bar is in contact with your
rotor. Its a warning signal saying "CHANGE ME!"

2. A little rock is caught inside the caliper, and is causing a racket.
Remove the caliper, and it should fall out. I just had to do this last night
on my civic, it was a tiny little pebble, made my car sound like shit.

How many miles on these rear pads - have heard of people getting as
little as 30K on rear pads. I suspect they are worn out - check asap -
really easy to change yourself. Get a Helms Honda Shop Manual if you
are planning on keeping the vehicle and doing the job yourself.
Dealers charge a bunch for replacing pads - if you do have someone else
change the pads, do not let them grind the rotors to "dress them up"
unless they are scarred for metal to metal contact.

It takes me far less time to change brake pads than driving to the
dealer and waiting around. Have used both Auto Zone pads and Honda
pads in past - Honda pads last longer. Also don't go to one of those
franchise brake places - dealers are pricey but at least they won't
screw it up - find a local garage that works on "Foreign cars" - most
do and also that others have used. Mechanics are now getting around
$25 and more an hour so it won't be cheap.

Re: Groaning / Squeaking / Screeching noise from LR wheel???

check www.tegger.com

His FAQ has an incredibly useful and easy-to-understand section on
brake maintenance. It is made for Acuras, but the parts in his pictures
were identical to those on my Civic. I had similar symptoms on my front
left brake and since I did his brake maintenance for drivers in the
snow belt, my brakes have never worked so good.

Kudos to Tegger and those who have contributed to his FAQ.

Does the noise go way when the brakes are applied? If so, you're probably do
for a brake service.

In my case, I had the same type of symptoms/noise, even when I was ridding
the
brakes. It turn out the my F/L wheel hub got bent-up (can't understand
how I managed that without destroying the mags *shrug*). However, on
a few occasions, I have hit potholes/or sharp dips (Toronto hwy sucks!)
while going around a sharp bend at over a 100mpg (do ya think..?)
