I'll be looking very hard at the 5 door Yaris. 13K for an automatic, abs, all airbags is a good deal when i don't need all the options.

I'm afraid the Fit may be overpriced when it is all said and done. Heck, you can get a decent mid-size car for the expected price of the fit sport.

I'll have to wait until both are on the lots.

Also, it seems that 40+ mpg is common on the Yaris, yet rare on the Fit. That can make a big difference in long term cost to own.

you get what you pay for on the fit. i dunno what the 'expected' price is, unless you are talking about the 09, which just so happens to be more expensive when you are talking about adding nav and stability control, both things that are unavailable on the yaris in any trim.

When my RX7 threw its water pump last fall, stranding us in the middle of nowhere near Thunder Bay, Ontario we were forced to rent a car for a few days. That car turned out to be a Toyota Yaris 4-door sedan with A/T. I hated the ergonomics right away, having to reach forward and downward for heater controls and the like.

And try as I might, I just couldn't acquire a taste for the center-mounted instrument cluster. Handling and acceleration seemed ok for what could be expected from 106 hp mated to an automatic, but still lacked that sports car/ go-kart feel that makes us like Hondas so much.

I'll play the Yaris card when I talk to the dealers about the '09 Fit, but I'd never but a Yaris.

Now, if they had done the folding seats proper like this with the xa (and made it ride more solidly), I would have given the xa more consideration.

I'll stick with my lovely Fit.

I think they are going to pick up allot of buyers though. I know more "adults" that know what a yaris is and have no clue what the Fit is. I've come across a few folks who say that all they don't like about the yaris is the lack of rear doors, then I show them the fit and they stop talking about Toyota.

17-20k is absurd for a car in this class.

i've driven the sedan yaris when i was looking at the fit, just to compare it to. the fit and finish on the fit is much better. the toyota feels like its going to die. and for some reason that engine seems to struggle alot and is really loud.

wanna see my results?

i've got a fit in the garage. fit>yaris in 08 and beyond.

I own a 2007 Yaris 3 door, base model, MT. I just recently bought a 2008 Fit, base model, MT. Yaris so far has 35k miles on it: zero warranty or any other repairs, zero complaints, no cosmetic/paint problems, etc. Fit just arrived, so too soon to tell.

My Yaris has more leg room, especially front; my knees hit in the Fit if I am not careful. Seats in Yaris are extremely comfortable, as judged by me driving nonstop 8-12hrs at a time on roadtrips. Forgive me for saying this, but Fit seat padding is thinner, and I have already needed to add a lumbar support cushion. Rear seats in Yaris are better padded and seem to be softer & larger. But the tradeoff to losing thick padding is Fit offers flush-folding rears. Rear seats in Yaris do not have seat-back angle adjustment. Carpet in Yaris is thicker (sorry!), even in trunk. Yaris offers a cargo privacy cover standard; in Fit it's a special order item, I am told. 08 Yaris now offers storage bins straddling spare tire; no room for much of anything in spare tire compartment of Fit.

Fit has a more normal dashboard location and layout. Yaris' weird dash location does allow for lots more storage in the dash (3 glove-box sized compartments, 2 cupholders, and many many nooks). Fit had tach which is nice; '07 Yaris did not. Not sure about the '08 or '09 Yaris, since nobody has any in stock for me to look at.

My base-model Yaris has AUX jack standard. I was shocked to see it missing on my Fit, and now I'm stuck shopping for aftermarket gizmos. Disappointing when I looked at a car with a big AUX button on radio which apparently goes nowhere. Wish dealer had told me this when I asked him about comparing with Yaris and with Fit Sport.

Fit does have power mirrors which is a nice little plus. But Honda forgot the front armrest, an item Toyota includes in almost every Yaris.

I don't see a huge difference in power between the two. Both of mine are MT. Handling is similar and it's personal preference which one you'll like better. I'm still breaking in the Fit. The Yaris has taken me through the Applachians including my GPS' "shortcut" through dirt-road switchbacks deep in the WV mountains -- no power or handling complaints, even on dirt and gravel.

Looks are all subjective. I like the looks of Yaris better: cuter, more distinctive, and more evenly proportioned IMHO. My Yaris came with 15" tires and the Fit has these little donut wheels (14"?) which I was told I could not upgrade short of going to the Sport model.

I wish Fit came in a 3 door version. I was stuck buying the 5 door, even know I don't like the "family car sedan" look of it or the smaller front doors. Just my personal preference. The 5 door Yaris does not excite me. To me it looks like a Scion or something?

Gas mileage on my Yaris has been great (35-40 mpg hwy), even when I'm not driving gently. I need more time to see how the Fit does.

$17k is crazy for a car in this class, but when I bought the Fit, the dealer had one other Fit left: a Sport that they had marked up with their "market adjustments" to well over $17k.

What I paid for my 08 Fit was within a few hundred dollars of what I would've paid for an indentically equipped 08 Yaris (however, I was unable to locate the Yaris and could not wait months for a special order). So pricewise, at least in 08, they do seem pretty darn close.

Overall they're very similar cars. It comes down to what you personally like and the dealers in your town. In some towns dealers are charging large "market adjustment" mark-ups above sticker or simply can't get more Fits or Yaris anytime soon.

Both are great cars overall, IMHO.

Sounds like most of the trashing of the Yaris is all subjective.

You are seriously delusional to compare Toyota quality to a Kia. In fact, the market proves the Yaris is a good product based on the dealer inventory #'s and the used car prices.

Anyway, I don't think these cars are in the same "class" anymore.

If I am going to spend 17-20K on a car, I'll be comparing the Civic vs Fit. Civic will probably win that competition based on my needs.

Yaris is cheap, reliable, basic transportation.

It looks alright on the outside (kind of xA-ish), but I can't take the center-mounted gauge cluster. It just screams "I don't want to be involved with what my car is doing" to me.

Everyone that likes or owns a yaris gets them cuz of the few small little details and dont look at the big picture.

"Poor crash test performance without optional side curtain air bags" -http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/2008-Toyota-Yaris/

this alone is a big reason not to get your so called cheap, reliable, basic transportation.

ohh check this out Best Affordable Small Cars - Best Cars & Trucks - U.S. News Rankings and Reviews

yaris is #28 out of 35 and is beaten by the VW beatle and the only car that beats the fit is its big brother the honda civic.

Side airbags and ABS are standard for 2009.
