Call me crazy, but I would love to see some custom rear wheel covers on a Ksight with volks tucked behind them.

No huge gripe with the Prius as a car; it's the politically correct green baggage that it hauls around.
Kyra Sedgewick (from The Closer TV cop show) was on one of the talk shows, and the host inquired what she drove. She said she drove a Prius, and the tittering and approving applause was both substantial and nauseating.
Ever watch the arrogant pricks who drive Prius? They'll tool down the road, block the fast lane and otherwise be annoying. But they have this smug, self satisfied look because they are saving the planet for the rest of us. It all makes me feel so unworthy. Or not. Think I'll go fire up the Jeep and trample some endangered plant species.

very true. though it seems more indicative of NEWER BMW drivers, as most of those cats drive them because they look at it as a status car. the 3 series is dynamically one of the greatest cars known to man, and there are tons of folks who drive the newest generation that have NO CLUE how great their car is, they just like it because its 'nice' and its a 'bmw'. lame.

i have met some nice bmw owners, but they were all older bimmers

An ironic statement, since a Jeep Wrangler is much more friendly to the environment than a prius. Any prius owner that thinks they are saving the environment have no idea what they are talking about. Here's a list with the total energy cost per mile to society in 2007: http://tinyurl.com/krjg5a

I didn't munch thru' all the fine points, but suspect the 'dust to dust' cost is low on the Wrangler because there is always someone wanting a Wrangler (TJ in my case), so they tend to stay on (or off) the road until they totally cease to function. That means a lot of years and miles for any given unit, and they are simple machines with fewer things to go ahoo.
Now, all that said, it's a hell of a sight cheaper to run the Fit as a daily driver; gas and tires especially.

An excellent presumption. The "usable life" of a Wrangler goes a long way for it's positive rating in that study. There are other factors that helped it as well, such as common parts used on the chrysler/jeep/dodge line, workers at the Toledo factory not having to commute long distances (yes, this study was comprehensive!), the fact that the Jeep is a pretty simple and low-tech vehicle, etc. The reviewers figured that the prius would have a ten year life to it because at that time the tech would be so outdated that it wouldn't be worth the cost to replace all those batteries. Oh, and speaking of those batteries, they also increased the prius cost to society, not only because of their disposal, but also because of all the international shipping involved to get those built (dang things go on a around-the-world tour).

The Fit is definitely soft on both the environment and our wallets. In fact, I traded in my Wrangler for the Fit. I'll miss the Jeep, but I recently added an additional 10,000 miles to my annual driving schedule, so I just couldn't afford it as my DD anymore. They are completely different classes though, so it's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The Jeep is actually one of the most affordable SUV's available.

Oh, and please don't intentionally run over endangered plant species just because of some douchey prius driver or lame talkshows. We might need that plant to cure a form of cancer one day, lol.

Good post, Solberg. I count my blessings that, for now at least, I've managed to hold on to the TJ. I've wanted one all my life. They can be tough to live with as a daily driver, tho' I've put 70K on in six years and had it on several 500+ mile trips.
We just retired a 10yrs/100K Cherokee, which also fits the simple and tough mold.
I would like a BMW, and wouldn't mind a Prius under some circumstances, but the baggage attached to both give me pause. And you're entirely right; no one gives a rat's ass about a ten year old Prius. A ten year old Wrangler is another matter.
It would seem the Fit is a good compromise for initial cost, economical use and fewer problems at the end of its life.
