Honda Civic sales ending in Japan
Honda Civic sales ending in Japan
According to a report from Japan's Nikkei.com, Honda will stop selling the Civic sedan in its home market as soon as existing inventories run out. As customers shift their focus towards MPVs and more compact vehicles, the popularity of the Civic has dwindled substantially in Japan – only 452 of the trusty Honda sedans were sold in the automaker's domestic market during the month of October.
Honda is still committed to offering the Civic sedan in other markets, such as the United States and Europe, where sales numbers are substantially more robust. In fact, new versions of both the U.S.- and Euro-spec Civics are set to bow sometime next year. Honda will continue to manufacturer Civic sedas at its Suzuka plant for export purposes. It's unclear whether Honda will continue to import the European-built Civic Type R Euro hatchback into Japan.

The Japanese Domestic Market has an entirely different focus... outside of performance and luxury cars, a car with a large footprint is expected to have large capacities. MPVs do this, three-box sedans don't. The Civic is a decent sized C-class. They have a myriad of A and B class cars, as well as the sub-A class Keis (which are roughly the size of GEM cars).
So, no not surprising. They don't sell the American sized Accord or the Camry in England, nor the Aygo here.

The Japanese market doesn't impress me much - sometimes I wonder if they had to surrender taste when they ceded power to allied forces. They have their go-fast cars, but the culture is obsessed with the tacky and grotesque. Some people like it, but I find it to be over the top. (Occam = not a Japanophile, if that is even a word). If there were a merger that combined German design and aesthetics with Japanese engineering and quality, it would be the return of the Axis powers! Daimleryota will crush you!
(Closest would be the design house that produced the Fors C1 global chassis that underpins the Mazda3 among otter cars - designed in Germany by engineers from Volvo, Ford, and Mazda)

japan is a lost world these days. japan will turn into a tourism country in no time.
the sedans are pretty much built in NA, right? especially then no meaning shipping sedans to japan.
