Also note that our reported fuel mileage ratings here in Canada are:

City = 7.1 L/100 km = 33 US MPG
Highway = 5.5 L/100 km = 43 US MPG

The EPA states the ratings for the '09 AT as:

City = 28 US MPG = 8.4 L/100 km
Highway = 35 US MPG = 6.7 L/100 km
Combined = 31 US MPG = 7.6 L/100 km

So it would appear, from input on this thread, that the Canadian ratings are much more accurate than the EPA ones....interesting.

No, think about it...Why 55 mph? Because that was our speed limit in the 70s and 80s? If 55 mph, why not 50? 45? The slower you go in top gear, the less friction and fuel usage.

I think I was actually getting higher than 42 mpg, because 1/2 tank later with my weekly work commute it still ended up at 41.1. I was averaging 70 mph when getting the "42" mpg.

It's also good to rev the engine. That's what it's made for.

If it makes you feel any better I average around 34-35 here in LA.

I'll feel better when I can get warm air out of my vents on my ENTIRE commute, not just when going over 80 km/hr. Oh I'm ok with my average 36 MPG but reading that some people are getting over 40 MPG has me a bit envious....

Can't be sure since I've only recently been noticing the cold air blowing, despite heat being to MAX and fan to 1 (and engine completely warmed up). Looks more and more like a coolant issue from input here.

Needless to say, those of you who get cold winters should check this NOW! I'll post an update thread on my heating system issue either tomorrow or Wednesday....

Just got back from a 180 mile loop trip to Nogales in my 3 day old Fit SA. What a pleasant first trip. Filled up on return at the same Costco pump and used 4.6! 39 mpg. Used the cruise control on the freeway at 65-75 mpg (about 60-40 freeway-rural)

Very pleased with this car after 200 miles!

Sorry, I made a mistake. The correct mpg was 31. I'm still happy for the first tank.

Which is very difficult to do here in LA. Still, I get 36/37 on the BSM just in city driving.

Ok, I was checking the Eco forum and cleanmpg again (can't help it!) and I'm not even sure about accelerating/RPM ranges now! Say getting going from a stop in a 60 km/hr zone (37 mph from here: Unit Conversions) with an automatic, what RPM should I be aiming for, max, to maximize my fuel efficiency? I thought slow (2000 RPM max) but read somewhere that medium speed is best to get up to cruising range... I just have to stop reading those threads! See, I would have been happy with 36 MPG but now that someone got 43.5 MPG with an auto....

It depends on if you're on an incline too, but theoretically, the slower you accelerate, the less gas you use, as long as you don't spend much time at high rpm in each gear. OTOH, if you accelerated to 37 mph aggressively and then coasted in neutral, your FE wouldn't be far off from your slow start.

You want to be in the highest gear as possible, all the time, but only if you don't have an upcoming hill. Just think of a 10 or 12 speed bike as an analogy. For the easiest acceleration, you would start in the lowest gear and climb through each gear but slowly. OTOH, if you're biking up a hill and upshift to a higher gear and then gun it, you'll be using a lot of energy. Same applies to cars.

If you really want to recoup your mileage, you may want to mimic what I do with a manual and shift it to neutral whenever you can, especially on declines...I get huge FE doing this. Sometimes, I'll be coasting for miles. Like going to Vegas there was this constant decline for about 6 miles, and I was coasting in neutral doing 85 mph when I started at 65 or 70. Huge fuel savings there.

As a side note, as my reward for achieving great mileage last week, I refueled this past Sunday and switched the FE meter to the odometer and this week I'm eschewing a lot of my FE mode and revving the engine, dipping into the throttle a lot more...holy cow, this thing is fun! It revs and sounds lovely, reminiscent of my Acura RSX-S, and the power delivery is smooth and constant up to redline. Sooooooo lovin this car! And, as I've pointed out in an earlier post, my engine has loosened up quite a bit and is revving freer with more torque. In short, this thang is fun!

2nd tank:
computer said 35.9 mpg (+3.7)
hand calculated: 32.2 mpg.

3rd tank:
computer said 37.5 mpg (+4.0)
hand calculated: 33.5 mpg.

mixed driving.
my daily roundtrip to work is 28 miles.

16 traffic lights one way.
32 traffic lights roundtrip.
at least half are red.

not completely. hey
i use them. i just try to look ahead and see whats coming.
this way i can determine if i stay on the gas or get off and coast.


also on a side note. i filled up yesterday. for this tank i decided to drive
fast. meaning accelerate fast and drive up to 65 mph.
amazingly i got 38.4 mpg. i was surprized. the BSM said 42.6 lol

Learning? The computer does learn your driving habits for oil changes but I don't believe it learns anything for your MPG. In order for it to learn that information you would have to "tell it" how many gallons you actually put into the tank.
