Liquid Sound Upon Engine Turn Off

Hi all,

New 2015 Fit owner here. I love the car but have noticed a sound and was wondering if anyone else had run into it and/or knew what it was.

Upon parking and shutting off the engine I hear a liquid chugging ("glug") sound coming from under the hood/behind the dash. It lasts for a few seconds and then is gone. The car runs fine and I've had no issues with it. I just crossed the 2k mile mark.

Any ideas? My thanks in advance!

That would be the gasoline sloshing around in the tank beneath you. The lower you get on gas, the less you'll hear it. Full tank equals loud slosh, lol.

Thank you Shockwave199! I feel silly now but at least I have an answer that makes sense (seeing as I just filled her up). You rock!

This.

Its been discussed many times in the past. Remember to search the forum before posting new threads, even though the GK is quite different from the GD/GE, there's still crossover.

I just did a search for "liquid chugging sound", and only came up with the original post of this thread, when Hysazu described the problem he was having, in his own words.

Of course using those exact words won't turn up much else, liquid chugging sound is not something that most people would piece together.

And what is probably the first thread on the sloshing:

In using your examples, one would need to assume "fuel" or "gas". In this case the person asking used the word "chugging", and "glug". It was a fair question, unless of course he had read this post:

I literally searched "sloshing."

Chugging/Glug do not accurately describe that sound.

I'm not here to nitpick, but you GK folk would really benefit greatly from using the search function. Which is all I stated in my first post in this thread.

Since the sound is coming from beind the dash, I would suspect that you have some air in the coolant system. If you recently had the car serviced or if coolant was drained then added, it could be the culprit.

Take a look at your coolant reservoir. It should be filled up to the max mark. Look in your owners manual for the shape and location of the coolant tank. Sometimes, shining a light right onto the tank makes it easier to see the level.

If the level is towards the min mark, you can top it off yourself with honda type 2 antifreeze/coolant and if that was your problem, the gurgling should go away in a few starts. Check your coolant frequently if you top it off; if the level goes down quickly and often, you could have a coolant leak (unlikely in a new car).

A word of advice: rather than fill the reservoir through the radiator cap (the one that has the warning on it), I simply fill the reservoir by unscrewing the plastic cap and hose that is right on the reservoir and use a very narrow funnel to fill without spilling antifreeze.

Hi Hysazu,

Thank you for purchasing a brand new 2015 Fit! As it could be just fuel sloshing around, we want to make sure your vehicle is operating normally. If you would like us to review your concern, please contact us via private message with your full name, VIN, mileage and dealer so we can better assist you.

Thank you,

Jonathan
