The only time it gets worse gas mileage is when my wife drives it and she still gets 40.

There's no way your getting that mileage and here's why.

I have an 07 AT with a 10.8 gallon tank. Your 09 has a 10.6 gallon tank, even smaller than mine. Do you have a MT or AT? Do you fill up when the light comes on?

Your 417 with a quarter tank.... Are you saying 1/4 tank until light or empty? Technically a quarter tank is at 2.65 gallons until empty. That leaves 7.95 gallons used. 417 miles divided by 7.95 gallons would be 52.4, no way. OR 389 total miles at your 49 MPG, 373 at 47MPG. If you meant 1/4 tank until the light comes on, then you used 5.9 gallons, and would make your calculation even further off.

You can't count most of reserve as mileage unless you actually USE that fuel.

IMO, the most accurate way to measure MPG, is to fill up to full. Drive until the light comes on. At that moment you know you have 1.7/1.8 gallons left. Record your mileage right then and divide it by 8.9/9 later if you have to.
