Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)

I live in AZ with mixed altitude driving, some around town, and two trips (one to Tucson and one to Phoenix) since i got it last Saturday. Both fillups have been around 31mpg (5AT), and that's with a majority of the mileage over 80mph on the highway. This is with 2 people and some stuff in the car and a fair amount of cross and head winds.

I should get to relax a bit on the driving, but can definitely see this thing getting 35mpg just by more normal driving speeds and load. I should be able to reduce the amount of highway mileage (at those speeds anyway) to see what this thing will do.

I am surprised by the low mileage some are reporting. Are you guys using high-octane fuel? Is this with the manual mode, or you guys just holding really high RPM for long amounts of time?

I used my cruise control for my entire trip this weekend, but the mountains made it hunt from 5th to 3rd and hang around 5k for a while on several inclines.

36-38 seem a lot more possible to me now that I have attempted to drive 55mph on freeway/40 city, trail behind big rigs, accelerate slowly.. I am a little over half-tank and I have driven about 190 miles. The first half of this tank was aggressive "normal" driving I've become more conservative driver ever since gas went back up to 3.20 for 87 octane

UPDATE: I got 34.5mpg on the first tank driving conservative. Only automatic mode, no shifting after 3k, try to drive behind semi's, go 55 on freeway go 40 in city.. It's a whole challenge on its own and I didnt notice how boring it would be if I didnt have to concentrate on all of the factors lol

This next tank though.. I need some fun. no more conservative driving haha

In 3055 miles I get about 28-29 mpg in automatic and 30-31 in manual automatic. Difference appears to be in shifting at lowest rpm the upshift will take which is apparently better than the computer program. And I get less downshifting with sport mode than auto on grades.

First tank of gas down. I followed the rules for breaking in the motor, which boils down to not jumping on it, accelerating slowly and evenly. Normally drove at 70 on the freeway, but went a bit over now and then. Filled the tank, did the math, and....

35.8MPG

I've been getting about 450km winter (600km sumer) as well BUT on a full tank... I've got about 26,000 km on my LX so in my book the car's broken in. If anyone knows how to "stretch" the tank I'd appriciate.
P.S. I've recently discovered someone driving a Yaris pulling 750km out of a tank in winter (& +/- 950km in summer). Now I've done the math and the best I can come up with is +/- 670km (in summer). ANYONE have an idea how this is possible? (it's a '07 MT base model Yaris) I only ask cuz I'd luv to do a comparison with my '07 fit LX. PLEASE note I called the honda and toyota dealerships & theire respecive Canadian Q/C departments and got no answers.

Wow cost me $29 to fill up my tank, We drive fuel efficient cars yet is does not "feel" fuel efficient. Gas is predicted to go up to $4.00 / gal this summer that means it could cost close to $40 to fill up the Fit assuming you run close to empty.

We should be considered lucky. I'd hate to be people with bigger gas tanks and less fuel efficient vehicles. Right now, I'm still waiting for some more realistic mileage numbers out of my car. I only have a bit over 1200 miles on it.

With around 1500 miles on my Fit, my last tank was calculated at around 26 MPG. It has steadily gotten better, so I'm confident it will get even better in the future.

In another update on my gas mileage, it is slowly going up, and that's cool. I'm also still learning on how much gas my car has when my low fuel light comes on, which it did yesterday.

After filling up at a Texaco station, I calculated 27.1 MPG in a mix of city & freeway driving. I now have over 1800 miles on my car.

This morning we headed out for AZ, the first tank down I-5 (lotsa hills, 65-75 mph) yielded 26mpg. In Medford I checked the TP, it was at 32 and I bumped it up to 40. The next two tanks gave us 37mpg!! And this was at 75+ mph! I'm convinced that the gas in Eugene is total crap. I've noticed this behavior before with different vehicles, it just hasn't been this dramatic a change. The TP change should have only bumped it up a couple percent. Anyway this is my best result by far, the odometer shows 3429 miles.

wow i live in california in LA .... i only get about 20-23 mpg ... i wonder why? 08 fit .... 1600 miles on it soo far ?... wtf how do you all get such great mileage?

I'm with you cKranez. I live in a suburb of Washington, DC and I'm also getting mileage in the low 20s as is one of my good friends who bought his Fit just before me. We've both got just over 3,000 miles on ours.

I now have 900 miles on my car. Tank 1 - 31.25 mpg Tank 2 - 31.54 mpg and Tank 3 - 32.25 mpg. I always fill at the same pump half speed 87 octane and stop when it clicks off first time. first two tanks i pumped roughly 8.5 gallons and thrid tank i pumped in 8.8 gallons, I have the exact numbers written down but just not with me. I drive a 50/50 mix of stop and go highway and stop and go city. I never use D, always the paddle shifters.

Just passed 30,000 miles on mine on a road trip from OH to KY. Got 35 mpg on the way down and 38 mpg on the way back Freeway (70's) most of the way with some local highways (60's) thrown in.

I've noticed that it usually gets low 30's on Ohio's winter gas, but in the summer I average about 35-36 with my mix of city/highway.

it came in at about ~25mpg, without a/c [driving my a/t fit pedal to the metal for a tank]. i drive my z4 around pretty zippy and get ~23mpg, sigh...
