Don't mash the gas pedal. Keep RPMs under 3K. Don't speed over 65 mph.

At under 3,000 miles, my Fit averages between 33-35 mpg in normal driving. On one tank, it got 38.5 in all highway cruising at ~70 mph with AC on. However, on this one particular tank, it got 27.5 in 95% city of lots of stop and go traffics with AC on and a lot of that little thing called... uhmm...Vtec in Sport mode. I'm personally very happy with the MPG results. Hopefully, it gets even better over time.

Happy MPGing!

I didn't track the MPG when cruising on momentum because the MPG figures on the scangauge was up to 175+ and is hard to get consistent numbers. Instead I'll report the Gallons Per Hour (GPH) figures here.

When shifting to neutral when the speed is about 45 MPH my car using around 0.3 GPH. When lifting foot from accelerator from a speed about 45 MPH, my car uses about 0.4 to 0.3 GPH.

When the vehicle is not moving, however, I can usually save 0.1 GPH by shifting to neutral. But a friend of mine told me that shifting between neutral and drive too often causes more where and tear on the transmission, and should be avoided. Does anyone know any merits behind this statement?

My last fillup was find of weird. I went 232.6 miles, my second highest ever, and stopped to fill up before the light even went on, so I was expecting good results. However, I think I overfilled the tank, as I put in 10.419 gallons, for only 22.335 mpg, my third lowest result. I pumped the gas in really slow, and the pump never shut off. I got a bit scared and blasted the last bit in there and it automatically shut off.

Since that fillup, I went 70 miles while the needle still pointed to F (I usually get about 35), and 180 miles at half (usually I am really close to E at 180 miles). I realize that for an accurate measure of MPG, i'll need to overfill it the same way, but is the secret to high mileage to overfill the tank?

In a word, no, assuming you mean MPGS and not cruising range. I suppose that in theory overfilling might actually hurt your mpg's (by 0.1% ) because the car has to haul the weight of the extra gas around.

I wouldn't overfill next time either per the stuff in the manual and other threads in this forum.

I'd just run this one down and then fill it up again, stopping at the first click of a known 'good' pump, then keep trying to use that pump if possible in the future to minimize the variation in 'shutoff sensitivity'.
The MPG's of this tank will probably be really high (because you started out really full, and then just did a 'normal' fillup.). If you average the 2 tankfuls together, that will give you a good idea of the mpgs for both.

If you do the stop on first click method in the future, you won't see the big variations.....

Getting 37MPG at 25000

I have a Fit Sport I bought in June of 2006. I was getting 33-34MPG on my commute but then I slowed down so that about half is at 65MPH and half at 55MPH. I now get 37MPG (sometimes 36, once 38). My commute is around 34 miles each way so I've put 25k on the little Fit already. I had to get the front rotors replace at about 15k (Honda paid for them) but other than that it's been great.

with 20000 mile on it I am still averaging 25.5 to 26.8 mpg in and around the hilly Atlanta GA area. If I were just relying on the gas mileage I would have gotten rid of this VBP Fit a long time ago. With the summer being as hot as it is and the fact that we are all forced into that useless reformulated gas for summer time I think that this mileage is probably right. If I were to hold the pedal up and don't go over 3000 rpm then I would have gotten run over a long time ago with Atlanta traffic! My V6 Accord still gets around 18 to 21 mpg along the same route I take with my Fit and if I want to go fast then that is the car for me. I still, after having the car for over a year now STILL get all sorts of looks, questions, and great comments. I like the Fit, the way it looks and handles. I have a few mods and am looking for the cash to put the supercharger in it... but the only drawback is the paint.
BTW, just took another trip to Alabama and averaged 38mpg on that trip; down from last year. But, this is steady driving @ 85 with AC. With around town with stop and go driving, even on two interstates, AND the tiny little engine with NO hill pull... that takes a lot of gas!

I actually think the trick to better gas mileage is to have a stick.... or bigger engine
The worst gas mileage so far: 23.4! The best 40.3!
By the by: I saw a trick on MythBusters... drafting large trucks! (Don't do this...) and it does increase gas mileage by a lot depending on how close... 50... 20... 10 and 2 feet that is. This is why they did not recommend this stunt. Jus' thought you'd like to know!?!

I was averaging 38mpg Feb-Jun'07, but after a couple of really long trips (~2000 miles), I'm having difficulty even exceeding 35mpg at all recently. I just changed the air filter ($38!) -- it looked pretty bad, maybe that'll restore the feng shui. [stock '07 sport a/t 26k miles] I was also checking out that a/t fluid change thread in the DIY maintenance sub-forum.

Yeah I was in Vegas a few weeks ago, and averaged 20mpg. Cripes it's hot there, how do you stand it?? The A/C is an mpg killer for the automatic Fit it seems. lol, no the '08 Hummer is rated 14/18 and 13/16 for the 3.7L and 5.3L auto, respectively.

The a/c is aweful here in vegas, I get 50-60F out of the vent when its really hot, and I have dark window tint.

i avg about 30 something mpg. And that is with the a/c on at least 2 all the time. Even when i was driving my my parents around and we were 4 deep with the a/c on 4 for about 9 days i still avg'd about 28 something.

so at least for me the vegas heat is ok

I started off with 32-34 mpg when the car was new. With close to 4K on it now, I'm in the 29-30 mpg range. I was hoping it would increase with a little bit more miles on the engine.

It could be that I'm more comfortable with the car and not driving like a granny, although I don't think I'm pushing it that much and still drive at the speed limit and 65 on the highway.

It's kinda disappointing as I bought the car for the advertised mileage and was going to live with the gutless motor for it. Now, I'm hoping that Honda will put out a factory blower or turbo for this thing.

There's an aftermarket turbo kit available I think already? But I'm holding out for the JRSC (go look in the engine mod sub-forum) kit for reliability, though it is going to be expensive. I doubt Honda is going to have a "stock kit" for a car that is disappearing next year.

My last tank was 240.1 miles on 8.203 gallons! That's 29 mpg, my highest ever! I was so excited till I remembered that the last time I got gas, I pumped it in very slow and it took a lot. This time, I didn't pump it myself, and the guy just blasted the gas in, so it took a lot less.

You gotta use the same pump the same way with a full tank to get honest numbers... you're a forum mod, you should know that!

I do know that but in New Jersey they won't let you pump gas yourself!
