No problem at all- do it all you want. Won't hurt a thing, and that is the expected use of the Sport AT.

After seeing the rash of posts claiming some rather poor fuel economy numbers for a Fit, here is an update on my daugther's fuel economy in her 2007 Fit 5AT with 23k miles on it.

She drives only city driving, and has the driving habits of a typical 16 yr old driver...by that I mean she does not drive "granny style" and is not trying to get high mpg. I just asked her what she has been getting and she said she's been getting 30-31 mpg fairly consistently on fill ups. She is an "info geek" type and actually does a quick calculation after every fill up (makes her dear old dad proud... ). We live 5 miles from her school, but she burns through a tank of gas a week because she drives all over town after school and weekends! Anyway, I never complain about the fuel economy we've been getting on her Fit...it's fantastic.

Also, a note on "coasting down hill" in the 5AT...we've got a MINI Cooper with an oboard computer that displays instantaneous fuel mileage and it always shows 99.9 mpg when coasting downhill in whatever gear I am in (5 spd manual). I see similar readings from my ScangaugeII in my 2002 Explorer Sport 5AT, so even if one did shift to neutral in the Fit, you wouldn't be saving any gas to speak of. You are likely getting well over 75+ mpg when coasting in fifth gear...plus it's a whole lot safer for you and the rest of the drivers on the road.

Cheers.

I have to agree. Coasting in neutral can be dangerous if you ever have to accelerate to avoid something. Over here, you have to drive with the idea that the other person is a complete idiot because most of them are. They merge without looking or signaling and many of the accidents do not include the instigator. Remember, you do not have control of the situation. You may be the safest driver, but the other person is not.

What's the scangauge read for mpg while coasting in the Fit?

I haven't connected the Scangauge to the Fit yet. Been running it solely in my Explorer so far. Not sure when I will get a chance to check it out. If I can steal the Fit away from my daughter, I'll try to do some tests.

Last weekend, just barely 3 days after I got my Fit, I took the car to Oklahoma to go visit my grandmother. By the time I got back to Dallas, my low fuel light had come on. My average MPG was a little over 31, almost all highway. I'm guessing this isn't bad for a brand new car.

Just gonna have to wait and see what the mileage does after the engine gets more miles on it.

The run to Oklahoma from Dallas is all uphill, isn't it?

It is if you are going up I-35 towards Oklahoma City. I did that with a friend last year when we were moving him to Minneapolis. He had a loaded Budget rental truck and we were towing his Buick Century behind it.

I was going up US 75 towards SE Oklahoma. Not too many hills, until I turned to go east on a state highway. There were some hills that way, but nothing steep.

no clue, but it is, both tanks have been right at 200miles for the full tank.... I'm at a half tank now and 100 miles. Pretty sure its going to be the same result....

Wow, I'm doing slightly better than that at 26 mpg for my urban commute! I'm at half a tank and at 120 miles. I usually go about 230-250 miles before I fill up with about 9.5 gallons.

Slowly getting better

I'm up to 2,700 miles and my mileage is slowly getting better. Started out at 25 MPG and now it's near 29 MPG. Since the weather is pretty cold here I'm hoping when it starts to warm up it'll continue to do better. I also switched from Exxon on my first three tanks to Shell. That might be helping as well.

I'm in Delaware with E10 fuel everywhere.

87 octane fuel top tier gas.

1400 miles on the odometer

Fit Sport AT

mostly urban with some highway and heavy traffic.

Normal driving

25.7 mpg was the best so far for the last 4 fill ups.

That's horrible for a little car with mostly 1-2 people.

Even my modded MINI Cooper S gets up to 29 mpg if I want.
25 mpg if I buzz around like crazy at 5000-6000+ rpms.

I don't think you have any uncongested highway over there. If I remember correctly, aren't you climbing into Mililani? The Fit does best on flat, long roads. Since it is under powered, city driving is going to cost. Your Mini has more power so you don't have to wind it out to go uphill or just get moving. It has more grunt power.

BTW, how does it do on Moanalua at Red Hill? I remember having to use 3rd in my bug to get up that hill. My friends would always blast past me in their V8's.

Basically you'll right. Mostly I have 1 to 3 people and this is OK. Heavy traffic is anytime near rush hour, just crawling along. Redhill is steep and so is H2 to get to Mililani. Going up is not that bad since I limit speed to 55 top 60 mph. No cruise control just steady going up. By the same token I should be doing better going down but it doesn't average out. Some long stretches during non rush hour but that's not enough. Many trips of short length to high school and shopping in Mililani doesn't help. So mostly city driving and heavy traffic.

But with 5 people, going uphill is much worse with not enough power and barely going 55. This doesn't happen much.

My MINI has 200+ HP and charges up any hill. But to get the good mpg I drive it the same as the Fit and stick to 55. It's subject to the same heavy traffic. I can easily get 25-26 mpg with daily driving. My very best was 33 mpg when it was stock 5 years ago.

I also have a 2006 Civic sedan EX AT 4 dr and it gets about 29-30 mpg under the same conditions.

Just an update on my bom fit with ~500 miles on it, I am just under a half of a tank of driving on my country commute and it appears my mileage is improving greatly. I have 160 miles on the trip meter, so according to my limited experience with the gauge that puts me near 30mpg, when i fill up again i will update

model: 08 fit sport
odometer: ~4500miles
latest fill-ups: 28 (mostly city),30 (mostly freeway), 31mpg (mostly freeway)
driving style: moderate acceleration (shifts between 3,000-4,000rpm), downshifts/engine brake more than regular braking, freeway speeds of 70-80mph

recently read the threat on Hypermiling, and am trying REAL hard to use the techniques go speed limit (less wind resistance, lower rpm).. follow behind big rigs (less wind => less wind resistance), and the killer.. accelerate at 3mph/sec what a challenge in So. Cal

I tried using some cheaper gas from places like Valero and Walmart and the gas mileage did not drop. I have a 08 Honda Fit base model-AT. I have been getting around 36-38mpg but I am a conservative driver.

Yeah, a full tank of gas and 4 people for me really feels like an anchor on the car. The car stays in 3rd trying to stay at 65 mph on some of the roads over here and that kicks in the VTEC, noise, and rpms and siphons out the gas.

I had a 87 Toy truck with a 231 Buick V6. Idle would pull it up any hill in 4th gear @ 25 mph. Only bad thing was when I brought it to Hawaii, it sucked serious gas, ran hot, killed batteries because I didn't wire the fan to the ignition switch. It would break the stock tires loose easily so it was scary. Had to have 265's back there.
