Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)
Fit Sport AT
~6,000 Miles so far
Upgraded Honda wheels
70% City Driving (~10 miles each day to-from work)
I've tracked the past two months of my usage with my gas receipts and tripometer, and unfortunately I'm getting 21 in the city and 30 on the highway.
My driving style is pretty laid back. I don't gun it, and I keep it in D (not S) mode and rarely go over 3,000rpm.
The car's up at Penske Honda here in Indy right now, and unless they get something usable from TechLine... I'm going to get rid of it. It uses up more gas than my '90 Civic did.
By the way, it's crazy that this car weighs on 400lbs less than an early 90s Accord.

Just to throw in my two cents as well, I am fed up with my Fit. I bought this car primarily for the milage. I was looking for a new car and found this to be perfect based on stats. I drove it and loved it. Now, the more I drive it, the worse the milage gets. It started in the low 30's; best tank was 35 mpg 300 mile trip non-stop. Now, 80/20 highway/city yeilds 26 mpg average. Nothing helps. I've tried everything. I dont speed, I dont accel quick, I let it warm for a few mins as is recommended, and nothing helps. One thing that I am sure that doesnt help is that I have to run the defroster constantly which in turn runs the a/c. I have read many places that the a/c shouldn't run below 40 F, if the a/c isn't truly on, then why does the accessory fan cycle on and off? Anyway, I think that I will trade the Fit in for something else before too long. I need to do some research on something a little bigger. Thanks for listening to me rant.
I went from getting mileage about the same as yours, to consistently getting in the 30's. My last two tanks have been in the 35 mpg range. I'm also seeing fuel economy improve with miles. I'm over 18,000 miles, and it just keeps inching upwards.
Hope that helps!!
Just some thoughts to consider.
Driving it with a normal foot for acceleration seems to be better for gas mileage than taking your time.
5,000 mile report
Sport Auto, 87 octane Sam's Club gas.
I'm happy with the results, I use the car 80-90% city driving (15 miles one way to work), and I drive aggressively. The couple of highway trips I have taken, I've averaged 35 mpg.
Here are the results:
____0 - 1,000: 27.481 mpg $2.962/gal
1,000 - 2,000: 29.207 mpg $2.267/gal
2,000 - 3,000: 31.101 mpg $2.109/gal
3,000 - 4,000: 25.530 mpg $2.164/gal
4,000 - 5,000: 28.428 mpg $2.072/gal
__Overall avg: 28.349 mpg $2.315/gal

More actual mileage data from a Fit owner...
I've averaged just under 31 mpg over the eight tanks that I've kept track of. Most of the mileage is highway, though some of that is around 70 mph, which might account for being so far off the 37 mpg that the car is supposed to get on the highway. The worst tank was 28.7 and the best was 33.97. I drive a Sport 5AT.
What speeds are involved in getting the EPA numbers? For example, do they assume that all highway driving is done at 55 mph? How about for city driving?

wow I cant believe my eyes. 30 mpg mixed driving-mostly town
I simply am shocked however It is not anyway close to what My manual did from day one. I could honestly accept 30 mpg. I am not happy with that number and it is nowhare close to what the copmany says it will do for gas milage... If I ever reach 40 mpg on the HWY I am going to pass out

I know I've hit close to 40mpg on the freeway. really long stretch, 60mph, cruise control engaged. Didn't have slow down or speed up for traffic. it was awesome. Then mileage dropped significantly due to me being stuck in my normal everyday traffic...
the next time i have a full/near full tank, and the ability to get the long stretch of road, im filling her up afterwards and posting the mileage.
Attention wyy183- AC comments
Hey, wyy183 , Listen to this. Yes the defrost does cost fuel to run but I dont think it makes such a terrible difference. I say this because I had a MT fit for 7000 miles and I would sometime run the AC. Around town I would get 33 mpg and hwy 38. Those are the mean nubers not the Hi and lows. The way I function AC is I turn it off and on. It isnt too crazy It is just that you kind of know when you have had enough. If I lived in the lower 50 states I am sure I could not do that. A very good reason AC is not as much a big deal is that The Fit has an electric power steering pump. That is a big thing. How many cars on the road have that. What it means is that normally the power steer pump runs off the motor by a belt as does the AC.It seems to me you possibly break even.
I have not looked but I wonder if the AC has a seperate belt? Why not unhook it to do better on milage and power.
Realize that I feel the same way as you regarding the MPG on the AT Fit so keep that in mind when reading my comments

It is just about 5000 miles (7977km) now and I can’t complain about the mileage.
Average for the 5000 miles = 6.015 l/100km (it’s the way we count in Switzerland)
= 16.624 km/l = 39.101 mpg (US) = 46.960 mpg (Imp.)
Best tank filling = 5.63 l/100km
= 17.761 km/l = 41.774 mpg (US) = 50.171 mpg (Imp.)
Worst tank filling = 6.657 l/100km
= 15.022 km/l = 35.334 mpg (US) = 42.436 mpg (Imp.)
The worst tank was during wintertime, with AC 100% switched on.
I can’t complain about AT either :-)

Fit Sport Mpg
I get 36mpg on the highway with cruise at 65 mpg. Mixed driving with a gentle foot on the accelerator pedal will get me between 28 and 33 mpg depending upon traffic. I have the US 1.5 liter version, which is underpowered compared to a Civic. The horse power to weight ratio is what keeps this car from getting 40 mpg at decent highway speeds like the Civic can attain. Unfortunately Honda doesn't make a Civic hatchback, so I got the Fit. Styling and cargo versatility makes the car though.
Tank 22 = 33.337mpg
Tank 23 = 33.068
Tank 24 = 33.140
6921miles = 33.665mpg
Original oil life = 20%
These last couple tanks were in very cold weather (Michigan) with some snow, traffic jams, etc. 88 mile commute round trip from work, 70 miles being ~75mph on I75.
Oil change next week, we'll see if it gets better.

I am not even getting 30 mpg yet. I have a little over 4k miles. The part that irritates me is I drive 104 miles round trip to work. Of that, 15 miles is in town, the remainder is open highway/interstate. My cruise is set at 70. I sold the car I had and bought the Fit for its MPG rating. I am very disappointed in not even being able to make the city rating
Many people complain about the mileage on AT's. However, have you guys tried to understand why the numbers are so low? I have to admit, my AT doesn't get near what it is rated. Here are some factors to consider:
-Under inflated tire pressure - I usually keep mine around 34 psi all around.
-Oil Viscosity - I'm using thicker 5W-30; I know this will contribute to greater pumping losses.
-Periods of Idling - I like to warm-up my car in the morning for 2-4 minutes
-AC usage
-Heavy foot
-Transmission shifting
Yes I do agree that the EPA ratings for this car is overstated; you won't get those MPG numbers because they do not represent the many different conditions we subject the car to.
There are times when I MPG figures are impressive (non-AC highway driving). Sometimes I feel like I could better control the transmission to increase the MPG; my tranny likes to 'hunt' for gears at times. Also note the disparity between people's comments. Some indiviuals get good gas mileage while others do not.
