Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)

My AT Fit will be with me one year on April 22 (official release date). Within the next couple of days the odometer will hit 20,000! Mileage is consistently averaging between 31 and 33 mpg over the last couple of months. For a few days I changed my route. Instead of driving on I-95, which varies between gridlock and the Daytona 500, I was doing a mix of steady highway at 55-60 and frequent lights with more gridlock, and I got 34.5 mpg. Also during that time I wasn't hauling another passenger. The first several months with my Fit the mileage for my regular commute was lower, as little as 27-29 mpg, so I'm guessing it's completely broken in. I'm waiting to see how it does when the hottest summer months are here and I'm blasting the a/c.

I got my worst milage the past week, 23 MPG!!! Sheesh, If it does not improve, I am getting rid of this thing. Buddy of mine has a Nissan Maxima that gets close to 30 MPG and has a V-6 with a ton more power.

I'm on tank #3 and got 23.5MPG... first 2 tanks were ~21ish.
Live in Madison WI and have had very cold temps (below zero many mornings and highs in the single digits), and short ~3/5 mile trips around town.
Going to be getting warmer temps this week so I'm looking forward to checking out how much that effects the MPG.
Checked the tires yesterday and they are all at the recommended 32. SHould I put a little extra in?

FIT automatics are defective leading to poor milege
There is no other conclusion to draw than that the automatic transmission Honda is putting in the FIT is defective. Looking at the forums, the manual gets good mileage but most FITs seem to get low mpg with the automatic. That would rule out all of the drive train except the transmission. My dealer's best mpg in their tests was 30.2mpg and the factory called to state this is within the "acceptable" range. I get 25 city and 29-30 highway. My son's Civic with 65,000 miles gets 30 city and 36 highway. Given the size of the FIT one can only say it is defective as there is no excuse in 2007 to build something that poorly designed.
I am also watching my oil dipstick as the oil level on the dipstick is dropping about 1/4" for every 400 miles. I think my engine is burning oil which would indicate bad rings leading to low compression and poor mpg. I am watching it closely. If it is burning oil then the only fix is a new engine.
My other concern is that if the poor mileage is caused by a bound up transmission due to design flaw then the durability is going to be reduced. I have found that it does not matter how we drive, easy or hard the mileage is always the same. Even on the highway it gets 29-30 whether you go 70-75mph like I drive or 85-90 like my son did on a 1600 mile trip.
I would not advise any one to buy a FIT with the automatic. There is something wrong with them. This forum knows it, the dealers know it and Honda knows it.

Thought that I would chime in here -
Today I drove to Atlanta, GA. I have a ScanGauge. Mileage for the trip was 35.4 mpg. My cruise was set on 77 mph and except for traffic - I maintained that the entire trip.
I turned over 20K miles today, too.
I've changed my oil twice, and am at 50% oil life right now. Using Mobil 1 5W-20. Tires are set at 38 psi front, 35 psi rear.
My cumulative mpg since I purchase on 5/17/06 is just over 30. I'm consistently getting 32-35 driving about 80% highway, 20% city.
YMMV

you changed your oil twice so far? that means.. you followed "Oil Life indicator oil change interval" right?
was it like every 8k or so for oil change??

Just over 7,000 miles for first oil change. 14,200 miles at second oil change. I'm at 5,800 miles on this one and I'm only down to 50%! Go figure!!

i been wondering ... should i just change oil around 4k or 5k regardless of OLI...
thanks. again..

Fray for giggles I might just flush my tranny when I get my first oil change. I am another AT owner whom has not seen a 300 mile tank yet. I am a mixture of highway and city about 15miles a commute. I was using the thumb shifts for a while and it was working a little better (26mpg) and I just ran the tank without using the thumbs at all and am coming in at (23mpg). To make the matter stickier for me is that if my mileage doesn't improve I already got plowed from behind by an F350 and can no longer sell the car as a certified used Honda. Lets hope the tranny fluid does the trick. I am curious whether it is a computer prob. though.

I think that's a pretty strong statement. My Auto Sport is getting 30MPG mixed use over the last 5k miles, total is now about 15k. I had one tank on the highway that was actually 38 MPG. No vehicle out there is expected to get the EPA numbers, that's why they're lowering all of them for the 2008 modles, but my Fit is doing well.

I would do what the MM recommends. It truly adjusts the oil life based on your driving. My 2007 Civic was using 10% oil life for each 600 miles around town. Then when I took a 1300 mile trip, I watched it carefully, and a 10% increment was 1000 miles of constant road miles. Most enthusiasts change oil too often based on marketing by the oil change companies. Honda has recommended 7500-10000 intervals since my 2001 Odyssey and maybe before. As long as you do it regularly with good oil, and a new filter, I think you're fine. Changing it twice as often, just wastes oil, money, & time.

i too have 2002 Odyssey.. i heard i could do 5k oil change.. but i change it like every 3-4k ...when you look at owner's manuel.. "for severe driving condition you got to change your oil often"... and what i've been told by my mech.. obivously every 3k..
one thing i like about Fit is It calculate Oil life for me.. and i plan to follow it...
once again thanks.

btw, checked the tripometer the other day, and its acurate to less then 1%, in other words, im going about .04 to .06 miles on the trip than an actual miles.

think about it, what kind of person would visit this site/thread in the first place?
Gas milage was on the top three required things on my list to make the purchase.... wah wah.

A total of 8,000 miles on our Sport AT. Overall MPG: 31.2 on almost exactly 50/50 split between true city and highway. The best highway MPG so far was 38.9 MPG. The worst ever was 26.8 MPG, when it was 80/20 city/highway.
