Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)
The engine is finally broken in.
After 8500 miles, there was a marked increase in mileage. I've been trying to drive very conservatively, and at 8500 my around town mileage went from 25 mpg to 27 mpg. I've been able to achieve 39 mpg on long family trips, with the car loaded down at 65 mph for extended periods. I've tried it at higher speeds and I note a marked decrease above 65 mph. I tried it at 75 mph and the mileage went down to 32 mpg.
3rd tank
My third tank yielded 35.6 mpg with an inordinate amount of crawling traffic. This weekend we'll be going to Atlanta with a full load-two parents, two teenagers, and luggage. I'll let you know how it goes.
As you stated above, keeping the cruising speed down around 65 does make a difference, but I found that when loaded up, the converter spends more time unlocked (rpm goes from 2500 to 3000 in 5th) when going up slight inclines. It gives a little boost in torque without having to downshift, but I have to believe that there is a hit in fuel economy when it happens. Let us know how it turns out, at least you'll get the chance to log more tanks working towards an accurate average.

This thread depresses me. I love my Fit, but one of the reasons I bought it was for the high mileage I was promised, and I'm just not getting it. My last two tanks were about 22mpg, lower than the 25 I was getting. If I was getting 30mpg, I'd have NO complaints at all.

Even if the car tests out better than your readings, tell us what the difference is, we all need to know how this can happen. We all might be doing something that we shouldn't.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

First tank filled by dealer, about 90%+ highway driving (~30-35 mile commute each way). All done in D, and I kept the RPMS under 3k almost all the time (babying it for the first 600 miles).
Trip reading: 311.4 miles
Gallons to full: 9.379
MPG: 33.2

The real question is: Will the dealership really be able to do anything? I'll try to make an appointment soon.
Poor gas mileage in my new FIT
I have had my new Fit Sport Automatic for 5 weeks. My gas mileage is unbelievably bad. First tank I got 21 mpg. Second tank I got 22 mpg. I drive typical suburban driving, short distances. I was hoping for high 20's at worst. Honda dealer brushed me off, and I just called Honda customer service at 1-800-999-1009. They would like to hear from others with this problem. I would like to hear from you too.
Hard to say why based on your limited information. Engine is still breaking in thus poor gas mileage. 9 times out of 10 it is the driver and not the car that contributes to poor mileage figures, not only on the Fit but any car for that matter. If you are just city driving you may want to consider a Civic Hybrid instead to take advantage of the stop and go driving that hybrids powertrains do best in.......try reseting your ECU by unhooking the battery for a few minutes then make a consertive effort to drive your Fit more efficiently.......I get the same gas mileage on my WRX driving it very hard so I just can't believe you are really getting this kind of mileage. No offense.....
On the rare occasion that its mechanical, I hope Honda gets you squared away.
But for the most part the only advice I can say is you have to remember that the car only has 109hp. Stop and go traffic, or in my case hills (uphill) will take chunks out of your mpg. People can sometimes forget this when buying a car, yes its cheap and economical, but be realistic as to what 109hp can and cannot do. If you live in an area with a lot of hills, or do a lot of stop and go traffic, then you will get slammed for mpg. It is simple physics that an engine with limited hp will have to work harder to get you where you want, hence crappy mpg.
If it turns out not to be mechanical, I agree with Fazz that you might want to try to adjust your driving habits or just trade up to a Civic or Civic Hybrid.

If it makes you feel any better, I was getting terrible mpg's my first few thousand as well. After the first 3000, things got much better. I now run 30-31 mpg riding mostly highway pretty aggressively. I could probably get 35 if I tried.
Btw, talking about the AT Sport.

first 2 fill ups - new Fit Sport 5AT
OK, so I got my new Fit, a silver Sport AT.
I topped off after the dealer brought it to me before my first drive. After the pump shut off I was able to put in .3 more gallons at this pump before it ran out the filler neck.
71 miles I drove from Co Spgs to Denver area. 68 MPH on the highway. No air. The pump this time shut off after .7 gal. I was able to put in another 1.3 at this pump. Call it 35 and change MPG.
I drove it next in a mix of driving, all with the air on. Some up the mountain on 285, looked at property in small mountain dirt road neighborhoods, headed back to town, 3 people in the car. Next was a run down town to meet a friend for lunch, city driving. Then a run around 470 down 25 to castle rock then out in the country to Elizabeth, then 10 miles of gravel back to a two lane, then 60-65 mph two lane back to the springs.
216 miles, 5 gallons. Pump stopped at 4.7. Was able to get another .3 in at this pump. 216 on 5.0 = 43 and change... even if I put in another full gallon (seriously doubt it would take it) I'd be at 36 MPG.
I think I'm gonna keep this Fit

EDITED to add: tire pressure is 41.5 lbs.

Better results
I finally got over 250 miles on a tank of gas. My gas light came on at about 246, and I drove another 6.2 miles to the same gas station (Hess) I used last time, for a total of 252.2 miles. I then put in 9.46 gallons, for 26.6 MPG, my second highest so far!
While I did do about 10% highway driving, whereas I usually do none, I feel it was offset by the 2 miles I went in 40 minutes during construction on the Schuylkill Expressway. Why they call it an expressway is beyond me, its always backed up.
Since I did so well on this tank of gas, I made sure to get the same kind for a second test. I thought maybe I finally found gas without ethanol in my area, but I saw on the pump a label that said otherwise. Maybe my car is just finally breaking in.
