Mileage reports: Automatic transmission (5AT)
I was watching PBS channel's Motorweek and they reviewed the Fit Sport with AT and got 36 mpg with their test route which was nearly the highest of all 7 small econocars tested this week. Yaris sedan had 39 mpg with manual transmission.
Hey that isn't a fair comparison!
Want good mpg then drive the speed limit and stay out of heavy city traffic.
Keep your air pressures up to spec at all times and make sure your air filter stays fairly clean.

no matter what I did for the first 1k miles, I got a steady 28MPG. I still get around 23-25 MPG in real city driving and if I'm a speed demon on the high way, 30ish MPG. Then again, if I feel like being an ass and "drafting" and driving slowish... I can get over 40 MPG. But its not that much more expensive to drive fast(er)... and it "is" much more fun to drive fast. Right now I have about 3k miles total. So, hopefully in a few thousand more the mpg will improve.
My brand-new Orange Sport Automatic lives in the Santa Cruz mountains in Central Coast California. No matter where I have to go in the car, it takes at least ten miles of up-and-down hill with tight turns (perfect for the Fit). On my first free tank of gas from the dealer, the mileage was 35.5! I am being gentle in my driving for the 1,000 mile break-in period, but not so gentle that I get in anyone else's way.
Good luck to all of you who have reported low gas mileage--

Took a trip up to Los Angeles today and drove 300 miles. Leaving a little below 1/4 left before hitting E. Filled it up and calculated out to 35 MPG!!! This is quite impressive for me at least. With my daily commute, I am only averaging 30 MPG. At least I know it's my commute that's causing the poor MPG rather than the car.
After racking up 4500 miles and tracking every tank I am still averaging 33mpg. I've had a few up at 35 and a few down near 30-31, but overall it has been very consistent. I think that I could squeek out 35+ on a regular basis if I didn't have to drive along with high speed interstate traffic on my daily commute.
I'm pretty stoked with the Fit. The cincher is that my wife likes it and she is notoriously finicky. She would not keep it to herself if the ride, or the road noise, or motor noise, or whatever was an issue.

???
Hmmm... in this forum I have seen people claim... to be getting 35 around town... 33... 40... and I think one post claimed 40+... in my experience if I baby my AT Base Fit I can usually squeak out 28 mpg on stop-&-go and 38 to 40 highway in honest mpg. I have followed all of the tips such as tyre pressure, slow take off from stoplight (much to the dismay of the people behind me), making sure that I attempt to fill up with the same amount each time, taking corners slower, etc. What gives?
"But I've been wondering, if it is safe to drop my AT into neutral as I coast down a hill. Everyone says its bad... but then again, they don't drive a fit."
I have been wondering the same question, I pop it up into neutral sometimes and then back down to D, the car seems to handle it smoothly but i of course don't want to damage anything... especially the tranny

Bad MPG=Bad Karma?
For a quite stable 2 or 3 months, I was averaging 31 MPG for my Sport AT, with mostly city driving. However, I noticed that instead of getting better MPG, like other CA Fit drivers are getting with their Fits, my mileage seems to be getting worse. Today, I filled up and noticed I was only getting 29.5 MPG. Last week, it was 30.5. WTF? Has anyone had any luck with the Idle Learn procedure? I really envy most of you who are getting 35-40+ MPG out of your AT Fits. I just had to pay for a $400 traffic citation yesterday. And then earlier this week, my Fit's windshield got chipped by a flying rock from a truck. Maybe it's a Karma thing going on with me...

the thing that bothers me the most is the small gas tank and filling it up every week.
As far as luck would have it - we have lots of land out here designated as "green belt". it makes our roads very narrow in certain spots. Due to this i have a lovely scratch from the front left door panel all the way to the back tire. looks like someone keyed it but it was because the darn brush was overgrown and the paint being like butter scratched right off.
am i upset? - no - i give up. I cant fight honda, they already painted my roof and hood, they will blame the tree and the city and the acid rain and the goblins.
if they painted the body i would not have the scratch so bad. talk about your road hazard.

Every time i think i am going to get a week with good milage i wind up sitting in a 15 minute traffic jam. I will never trust EPA figures again

Still, I am surprised and a little unhappy that my mileage isn't somewhat better. I traded in an Odyssey for the Fit, hoping to double the mileage. It's maybe 50% better
On the updside, I love the way it drives, love the "magic" seats, love the fact that its a Honda, love the fact that it will be totally paid off when I'm ready to give it to one of my kids...when he leaves for college in a couple of years (oh, and he loves it too!).
25.7
Today, I filled my tank which was down to 1/4 approx... 205.7 miles / 8.0 gal (US) = 25.7 with the majority (92%) to and from work on I75 & I85 both ways and stop and go traffic. I guess one of the other posts were right: this car is designed for "city traffic only" were you would be going a steady pace and a lot slower. yea honda...
Check with the dealer first about "Flat Towing"

I spent 5 years driving "Motorhomes" from the factories to the dealerships nationwide and many of us would tow a personal vehicle behind the motorhome then drive our personal vehicle back after delivering the motorhome.
Some vehicles can be "Flat Towed" and some can't. The only automatic that I knew was capable of being flat towed was the Ford Escort that one of the drivers used and it had to be running while being towed otherwise the transmision would be damaged.
Other automatics either had to have lock out hubs, driveline disconnects, or the driveline removed which doesn't apply since we're talking about front wheel drives here.
Anyway ask. "Can it be flat towed at highway speeds with the engine running ?". You may need to explain why you're asking to get an answer.
My first tank on my Sport AT (dealer filled) only gave me 406km, I filled up with 35.5 liters which works out to about 26.9 mpg
! I am taking it very easy driving it, the max rpm is about 3k and only for very steep hills and short distance that I need to maintain the speed, but mostly the engine rev about 2k or below. I don't know what people define as Highway driving, as my daily route is about 40% at speeds above 80km/h and 60% city with alot of hills. I hope the mpg will improve, otherwise I am very disappointed

I had my second fill up today, and I'm very, very dissapointed. On my first fillup I had around 31 MPG with around 60% highway driving. My second tank was all city, but I got a measly 22 MPG. (170 miles on 7.82 gallons) That's just ridiculous. I've driven the car fairly easily for the most part. I push it every now and then, but I usually drive fairly casually. I have the AT Sport.
Hopefully my next tank won't be so crappy.

Well now I have a Black Sport Auto, and I average 36 MPG combined. went out today for a coffee 80 KM's away. Basicly stayed at 120 KM's /H our all the way their and back and got 40MPG. My worst was 32 MPG to date , I'm enjoying this car alot. I run 205/40/17" tires on 17X7 rims with a +45 offset. Do I rub, only when I hit a big bump and then it is only on the plastic tab in the wheel well that the tire rubs. Enjoy your car guys and gals. Just turned over 7000 KM's on the car today.

2,000 mile numbers
Thought I'd post my results after 2,000 miles. I've had the car since June 27, 2006 and just hit 2,000 miles on October 11.
Here are the numbers:
The first 1,000 miles I averaged 27.48 mpg and paid $2.96/gal regular gas on average.
From 1,000 to 2,000 miles I averaged 29.21 mpg and paid $2.26/gal regular gas on average.
Combined mileage after 2,000 miles averages 28.34 mpg paying $2.57/gal.
The vast majority of my driving is 15 miles to work and 15 miles back home. This is mainly stoplight to stoplight driving - I have fun with the car but wouldn't say I'm hard on it at all. My first highway trip of significant length was a few days ago, traveling 309 miles averaging 35.42 mpg (this was a combination of 75 mph open highway and some twisty backroad driving).
Happy with the results but see it'll get better with a few more miles. Cheers!
