40.7 is better than what they advertise for HWY only: Fit Mileage
They nornally provide you their estimate measured/calculated with perfect conditions.

I want it to be true, but I am a bit scheptical, are you certain your data is Accurate. You had 33mpg to go (Which was pretty good) and then 40mpg on the return trip. Why such a big difference? Did you kill all 3x passengers and dropped them in a ditch somewhere with their luggages?

There are always different variables when driving, but physically removing the passengers while at-speed to gain MPG wasn't one of my methods

Keep in mind the EPA averages are just that, averages. When they say "37mpg highway" that actually means it varied anywhere between, say, 32 and 42mpg for an AT.

The weather was much warmer on the return trip, so that may have helped, plus we were more careful about taking control on the steep hills so that cruise control didn't go RPM-crazy trying to keep us at 60mph. Maybe a really REALLY strong tail-wind? I dunno

On the "to" tank of gas, we did way more around town driving once in Sunriver, plus probably had a good 20 pounds or more of food, etc. It also included 50 miles of pure city driving before the trip started, etc. We filled up while in Bend half way through the trip, did some back-and-forth driving on the freeways between Sunriver and Bend, out to some Buttes, hikes, etc., and then drove all the way back through the passes/mountains with all the same passengers, and filled up in Salem before continuing to Portland. The tank back was (roughly, I don't have my book in front of me) 303 miles on the trip meter since the last fill-up, and we filled the car with 7.4ish gallons (not topped up, I never do), so around 40mpg. I still only get around 29 or 30mpg when I just do city driving, going to work and back every day. Our lifetime average is 31 right now.

I was surprised when I calculated the MPG, I can tell you that!

Averaging 31-32 mpg on every tank of gas since I got it in July. AT, heavy city driving, A/C on constantly and I don't baby it too much. Just fine with me.

My mileage is up and down.

I have the AT Sport.

Highway is fairly consistent at 37-39, and those are Alaska roads.. Twisty, hilly, etc.

City varies a ton. First tank from the dealer was 30.7 and since then I've been getting 23-26. I don't know how in the world you guys are getting 33 in the city. I've started driving a bit more consistently and starting less aggressively.. So far it's helping, but I'm at almost 100 miles and have used almost 1/2 a tank.

I wish I got 30 in the city. I have 2300 miles on my Fit, too.

Ditto. Something happened around 8K miles after I changed to Mobil 1 oil 5W20. My last four tanks were 35, 34.7, 33, 37.5 mpg. (A/T sport) 37.5 is my best, and 25 is my worst (summer time A/C + heavy foot). Lifetime mpg is ~31.9 so far. I only quote full tank fills, 8.6+ gallons (usa).

The wonders of a hot air intake. I'm guessing its been fairly warm in Atlanta. Apprently with a hot air intake, the engine gets less O2 so the engine runs with less HP. as I'm guessing, the majority of low HP cars get great gas milage.

Someone had posted in another area a Q about mileage.

Here is what I can say.

AT

Average driver, I play with the paddle shifters but I'm no racer.

First time I let it go until the get gas light came on I had 303 miles on that tank. It was around 2500 or so miles on the car overall.

First oil change was at 5203 or so.

I've been driving a little harder lately, but I still only fill up once every 7 days. Have yet to let the gas light come on as my commute leaves me between gas stations for awhile.

I normally spend around $26 in Illinois.

Once I get a hang on the paddle shifters I'll play with them more realtime and se what they do for me.

So I say my average is around 32mpg

1st tank of gas - very pleased.
Sport w/AT - 268 miles - 7.6 gallons - 35.27 mpg.
Some highway - some city - really a mix. Who knows how full the dealer had it - and I stopped at the first click and rounded it up a hair to get to an even nickel (a obsessive that way).

I drive like a granny... and I only get 26 MPG in the city. I also rarely ever go above 2000 rpms. On the other hand, when I'm on the highway, going 70+ I get about 40+ MPG. Depends if I'm drafting a truck (60+), semi-truck(50+), or a bus (45+) is how much MPG I get. Something about having that tail gate up that just screws with the air flow. Also, go get a Scangauge. It reads a little high MPG at first, but after you calibrate it, it works like a charm. I think it was off about .5 MPG when I caculated my MPG by hand.

For the first 2000 miles, I think I had 1 tank that was over 30MPG. Kinda cruddy if you ask me. Then I went on a lovely 200 mile trip and saw what the fit gets highway. I'd immagine that NYC is probably more stop and go than Baltimore... so I'm guessing 21-24 MPG would be considered good. (I don't know how many times I wanted to stab the people who report, oh I'm getting 45MPG Highway and 35MPG City.)

i so agree with your last sentance!!

but i have been to baltimore and we are neck and neck. i dont live in Manhattan, i live in what would be called a suburb (2 family homes and trees). its called Staten Island, and it is part of NYC just like queens and the Bronx and Brooklyn.

just that my borough is less populated - less congested - more like a small city but lots of stop signs and lights. so every time you get up to speed one has to stop at a light or a stop sign. there is only traffic during rush hours.

So yes i would say its much less traffic then DC or LA and the city up here, but its still more stop and go then you would get in a small city in the mid west.

Around our 10th tank on the car, over 2500 miles, and I got 31mpgwith about 80% city, 20% highway. I'm happy! Lifetime average is right around 31, but should continue to rise since our early tanks were all around 28mpg. We're now getting 36+mpg when just doing highway.

We recently bought a Fit AT Sport to fit our third child, and I'm averaging 29 between my first fillups. We now have over 1800 miles on it. That's taking two trips, mostly highway and the rest town driving. My highest was 31.8, lowest was 26.4. I asked my Honda service department also about the mileage with no answer. I love the car, just disappointed with the mileage. I certainly hope it improves soon, like it has with some other members. Before I drove a Civic, manual, and consistenly got 35 in the city. Would have kept it, but it wouldn't fit three car seats.

Well, first of all, since that was your first post - Welcome Aboard!!

Now, you're mileage sounds about like mine. My was the same up until about 6,500 miles, and it is steadily increasing now. My last three tanks have been above my previous average of 28.7 - in the low to mid 30's.

Get it in 5th gear, and leave it there! If you have a Fit Sport A/T, then you can put it in S, and make is shift sooner and it will stay in 5th longer, too.

Good luck!

My U.S. Fit Sport automatic gas mileage has been very disappointing. The car now has more than 5000 miles and has averaged between 28 and 29 mpg. This is for mixed driving (about 50% highway at 70 mph) and mostly with the A/C on. I did have one tank of about 70% highway mileage where I did not use the A/C and was surprised to get 36.9 mpg. So I'm theorizing that the A/C just sucks the life out of the engine as far as fuel economy goes. The last couple weeks have seen an improvement in mileage (31-32 mpg) as a result of not using the A/C.
I think those getting more than 40 mpg are driving the European version with the 1.0 litre engine and manual transmissions. I'm not sure if the smaller engine versions are available in Canada or not, but the increased performance of the 1.5 litre engine is the reason we have that motor here in the States.

I have a manual sport and I will have to insist on the fact that the fit being frugal as it is, will not make magic by itself. I just got my first 41.64268MPG and the before tank was 25.50371 so , it really was my foot saving gas this time. Ans stop and go trafic will kill any mileage in any car exept hybrids who perform the better in stop and go by using only electric.

And like the guy (Idon't recal the user name) with the civic Si, I would take the Si if I coud afford it, but the price difference was too much for me. 17,300 for the Fit----25,900 for the Si, plus need the doors for the 2 babies. Now the 4 door Si AAAAHHHHH! , and now the Mazdaspeed 3, DOUBLE AAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

My first fillup for my Auto Sport gave me around 31 MPG. That's with about 40% highway and 60% city. It's also assuming that the tank was full when the pump first stopped pumping; I didn't try to top off at all. I'm happy with 31, but I still hope it improves as the car breaks in.

Wish I got 31 mpg. My first filllup was 24.6. With interstate driving and this area of Atlanta suburbs being hilly may be the reason. On I75 & I85 even though the speedlimit inside I285 perimeter is 55mph if I go that I get runover. Flow of traffic is 70 to 80! My milage at last fillup before my road trip was 25.3. The fillup before that was 27.7 with no change in habits. So I am going to get this checked. AND the passenger side window squirter is on the blink. But I like the car and if I had access to these little beauties I could sell them all day long!
BTW yesterday I officially got 24.77mpg! Wow, and what was one reason I bought the car... oh yes: gas milage...
I will try and post part of what Honda says about this in more detail. But the official Honda thinking is that the car gets better milage at about 45 to 50mph. AND the 31 - 38 on the sticker is what is called guidelines! I started out with 27.7! The service writer at my Honda dealer said that even with 5600 miles on it the car is still in a break in period. wtf
