L15A Engine Porting/Polishing

Hello all,

Just picked up an '07 Fit Sport with the intent of turning it into a bit of a track day/race car. The final goal would actually be a champ car series build that wouldn't see much road use at all. The current head is in a bit of a pickle. Cylinder 2 has an ignition coil bolt that sheared and is firmly planted in the head in back and is far from easily removable with the engine in the engine bay. Further, cylinder 3 had a spark plug blown from the previous owner (hence the sale) and when I went to insert a new spark plug, the new one wouldn't even thread in. After a little research on the forums, I'm seeing that the threads might have simply blown out.

All that to say, we may just be buying a replacement head entirely and swapping it on. This leads me to my question... While we would potentially have this "new" head out, ready to go into the car, what would we gain/lose by porting or polishing the head? Basically, is it something worth doing? Is there any bhp to be gained in doing so or would it require an ECU flash to make the most of it? Granted, this will mostly be a stock engine for awhile. A header and possibly intake will be the only "power" mods for the time being.

Thanks a bunch for any input,

Matt

My understanding is because of the narrow angle of the valves and the head design there is not much material that can be removed to enlarge the ports or improve flow by much.

Yes theoretically a mild port and polish will flow more air. Im sure it has been done because of the popularity of the fit. Unless you are doing all the work yourself the cost to benefit ratio is probably not there.

You could buy a long block or two from a junkyard for what it would cost for a machine shop to build you a head. I'd find a healthy engine at a yard and throw it in. Lot less time/money to get that thing driving. But if it's worth it to you, would love to hear about what kind of results you get from some headwork.
