B124 Maintenence questions from a noob

B124 Maintenence questions from a noob

I have a 2007 Honda Fit Sport (automatic transmission) (which I love dearly) that just rolled over 100,000 miles. I had the oil change light wrench come on, as expected when it drops below 20%. I also had the B124 code come up. Obviously I will be having the oil changed, but after reading on the forum from another user, this means I would need to have my valve clearance looked at, spark plugs replaced, and (From doing some reading on the forums here) possibly replacing some gaskets in the engine that wear out. A few questions... (I am in no way a car mechanic, as my experience with cars has been limited to replacing an old battery with a new one, haha)

1. When getting my oil changed, should I also have any other fluids changed? To my knowledge, I don't know the last time the transmission or any other fluids have been changed.

2. I understand the valve clearance needing to be looked at. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in terms of costs, what getting it looked at would be? And if something is off, what it would be to adjust the valves?

3. The gasket recommendation... This gasket thing doesn't show up in the owners manual as part of that code but evidently was suggested by a dealer? Anyone have any knowledge on this. Link to the thread I read about this on found here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/1st-...intenance.html

4. The car is starting and running fine... the b124 code recommends a spark plug replacement. Should this be done even if the car is running fine?

Thanks in advance for all the help! I plan on calling around some of the shops in the Minneapolis area for some quotes, but I wanted to get an idea of exactly what's up and what I should expect. Also, if anyone has any shop recommendations for Minneapolis/St. Paul, I would be grateful

B: Oil and filter change
1: rotate tires (if needed)
2: replace engine air filter and cabin air filters (if needed)
4: Replace spark plugs and adjust valves if noisy
Plugs are 100,000 mile replacement items.

You say you have replaced your own battery.....
Can you change your own oil?
You can replace your own filters, that's simple.
Can you rotate your own tires? Check brake lining thickness while the tires are off.
Can you replace your own spark plugs? (Use the correct plugs though)
If you can DIY these in an afternoon, you can probably save $3-400

I/we suggest transmission fluid drain and fill every 30k (or even more frequently) using only Hondas ATF DW-1 fluid.
If you can change your own oil and filter, you should be able to handle this too.
If it's never ever been changed and it looks very dark, I might get a case of Hondas fluid and drain/fill about 4 times to replace the vast majority of the fluid. (I've done this for every used older Honda purchased by family)

Engine gaskets?? Only as needed. Got leaks? Get a flashlight and look around when you get under the car to change oil.


Valves on these don't often become noisy, so it's rare anyone notices anything unless or until tight valve clearances cause other problems. Tight valves don't make noise, but they can cause other problems.
Price estimates will probably be all over the map LOL I'll guess anywhere from 2-4 labor hours x shop labor rate. Plus a valve cover gasket.

How about the antifreeze, has it been changed yet? Another DIY drain and fill operation.
Brake fluid, every 3 years according to the owners manual? Another DIY if you and a helper can bleed brakes while the wheels are off for the tire rotation. A vacuum bleeder kit is real handy for this, makes it a one-person job.


Basic inspections, a list of genuine needs should be presented after inspection in a shop, if they do that sort of thing.
Be careful, an inspection is only as good as the person doing the inspecting. Many only try to sell you the services and flushes that generate profit instead of things the car actually needs.
