Rattling noise, not the heat shields

I'm getting a metallic rattling noise around 2-3k RPMs when I load the engine. Doesn't happen otherwise. I checked all the heat shields and took care of any that were loose. All are very tight now. Still the noise is there.

Does anyone have experience with this? Could it be something else? Like is this what it sounds like when the valves need adjusting? Maybe some actuator? Or a loose pulley? Car has 150k. 2010 base manual transmission.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I have the same problem (2011 Sport automatic transmission, 64k miles, previous owner spent over $5k on dealer service so this is in superb mechanical shape).

Had two shops try to tighten down heat shields. I also replaced all the spark plugs and tightened down to 20ft/lbs. Still haven't solved.

Do a forum search to help. These might get you started.

Wow okay, so you have far less mileage than me. Can I ask, do you know if the valves have ever been adjusted? I'm wondering if that is a possible source of the noise.

Dealer told me valves were never adjusted and told me they typically look at them at about 100k miles.

That said, you will see people here adjusting earlier. Exhaust valves in particular seem to need adjusting. There are plenty of posts here and some videos available and job is a few hours. Lots of plastic clips WILL break if you remove scuttle panel; there are part numbers and cheaper sources on the forum

Cool, thanks man.. I don't know when I'll get the chance to give this a try but when I do I'll report back the results.

If you ever figure out your rattling issue please let me know!

Not saying that it isn't your valves but both of my vehicles lost / losing their rusty heat shields.

Yea I hear ya. That exactly what it sounds like but I've checked all the shields and they seem solid and on there to me.

It might be internal to your exhaust system. Have you tried taping on your exhaust lightly with a rubber mallet? Could be something loose inside a resonator, cat or muffler...

I agree with Frenzal. Tap on the catalytic converter (when cooled down) with a rubber mallet. I had a high mileage Volvo 145 where the cat's ceramic honeycomb must have broken up to the point it 'rattled' and you could hear it while driving.

Thin metals operating at such high temps sure do react to temp fluxuation, which is most noticeable when shutting off a vic after a long drive. Just overly obvious food for thought.
Specific consideration would be exhaust hangars. Check them things out. At some point in some fashion exhaust lines on all cars ive touched are isolated against vibration through use of rubber hangars. Theyre exposed to high temps and road grime, and can get stiff, brittle, stretched out, so on.

I wonder if their loss of flexibility could result in noisy vibrations at points where there is a temp difference, say for example, cat, cat shield if its affixed to the line. At any rate, worth a peek and a feel. May be too far away, but exhause has lots of resonance.. think its possible that the exhaust tip cover, if equipped, could make noise at the end of the line that might reach you in the cab or engine bay?
