Might need a new engine...

Hey FitFam,

Two days ago I heard some knocking from my engine as I was decelerating off the highway. I pulled over, turned the car off, and checked the oil. Nothing. I had no oil on the dipstick. After freaking out I loaded my Fit into a tow truck and got her home. I tried putting in 5w 20 to get some oil in there and the light knocking turned into deep knocking. I stopped the engine and it's been sitting for a day. I looked for a new engine already and I'm considering an engine swap (same L15A, no money for a K series yet).

The oil light didn't come on, and I didn't see any white smoke coming out of the back of the vehicle. I was overdue for an oil change by 3,554 miles, the last oil change was 3/15/2020.

What should I check before swapping in a new engine? I think it's as good as dead. I have never really wrenched on cars before, so this will be my first time doing anything mechanical myself besides changing a tire.

I feel like the biggest idiot for not keeping up my oil change routine and for not even checking my oil

Take it to a trusted mechanic and have them diagnose it. It's a huge difference between changing tires or even oil to diagnosing a knocking sound.

What was the oil life % at?

I can't say that I check the dipstick in between oil changes that often. Maybe one or twice. I do keep an eye out for any oil leaks though.

You’ve got a L15a7. The L15A is a JDM motor and won’t have an egr.

I picked up an engine for $300 to use as a core for my turbo build.

unless you have a lift don’t think about doing it yourself. For me the big headache were the axles. They got stuck in the diff and I ended up needing a new transmission after snapping a snap ring in the diff.

get a professional to take a loook like goober said. If you get a good shop to take care of you that engine could last another 200k. Unless that Michigan rust gets to you.

Junkyard engine $200 or $300 plus rebuild. Can be done in a weekend.
K swap..... maybe $4000 + labor and months?
