Weird problems after ac compressor replacement

Hi all,

I have an 09 fit sport and I replaced my ac compressor this morning. After vacuuming the system and recharging the ac works fine, but I now have several other problems. My parking brake light is on, my drive light is blinking and my power steering isn’t working and has a light. I only replaced the compressor, so I only unplugged one plug. I assume I inadvertently unplugged something else, but I can’t find anything that is disconnected or even that would have been in the way of where I was working. Are there fuses or relays that I should check?
Anyone have a clue?

Thanks in advance

No one has an idea? Is there anything that ties these systems together? Also the brake lights stay on. Didn’t notice this until it got dark outside, but if the battery is connected the lights are on.

Can’t answer your question about how these different circuits are connected. But see this link about shorting negative and positive terminals together once they are disconnected from the battery. Never personally had to do this but have heard this working sometimes.

Are some of the fuses blown ? Did you disconnect the negative battery terminal when doing your repair and if not possibly short circuit something ?

Ok I tried the procedure and it didn’t change any of my symptoms. I didn’t find any blown fuses but the relay for the ac clutch was bad, which probably means I didn’t need to replace compressor at all.

I didn’t disconnect the battery while doing the work, so I definitely could have shorted out something, but what?

What would effect all these systems but not cause it to not run? It seems to run fine. I haven’t driven it since I don’t have working brake lights but it will shift into drive and reverse and move and seems to be running fine.

Thanks for your response.

[QUOTE=77586;1461955]Hi all,

2009 fit
may I ask why you changed compressor. I have a 09 fit approaching 200000 miles and have wondered if I should put a new compressor in pro actively. I’ve had two hi mileage Honda cars with compressors that blew up, sending particles through out the system and making the ac system unfixable.

I replaced it because it started intermittently not engaging the clutch. At first I could turn the ac button off then on and it would come back on. I was pretty sure the compressor was fine but the coil was going out. Honda wanted close to $1000 for a clutch and coil and an aftermarket compressor was only $200, so I replaced the whole thing. And I had access to a vacuum pump and was confident I could get it recharged properly.

Sorry that the short the battery terminals did not fix your issues. Try the simple things first. I know you said all of your electrical issues happened after the compressor replacement. But you might want to have your battery tested along with a load test. Sometimes low battery voltage can cause issues with the ecu and create odd electrical issues.
If the battery tests ok probably stating the obvious but get a schematic, test light and volt meter to determine where you are losing power.
Good auto electrical shop with high end OBD scanner might be able to pinpoint problem area quick perhaps.
Only other suggestion is to check all ground connections for corrosion or loose wiring.
That’s about the best advice I can offer…

I appreciate you responding. I do need a new belt tensioner as it seems to move way too much, but when running I’m getting 14-14.2 volts from the battery so I figured low voltage wouldn’t be the issue. Guess I’ll replace belt and tensioner and have battery tested next. If that doesn’t solve the issue I guess I’ll have to take it somewhere as I’m not confident at all in being able to track down a short.

Is there any reason I should go to a dealership instead of a shop?

Thanks again.

Personally the only time I use a dealership is for warranty or recall work. Otherwise I try to do it myself for the most part. If it’s something outside of my skills I seek out an independent mechanic.
Going to the dealership can be a roll of the dice IMO. You might get a competent mechanic with good diagnosis skills for electrical issues but then again it could turn out to be a waste of time and money. Personally would try to find an independent shop locally. Competent shop would have have access to AllData or something similar for wiring schematics and troubleshooting steps.
Good luck and reply back whenever you solve your problems.

With all those lights I would be concerned about driving for safety.

Can you get the car scanned for codes?

Try disconnecting the battery for an hour.

Check all the fuses.

My first guess is that maybe a ground or connector got dislodged when you were working.

- I would physically check all the connectors in the area are fully inserted. In the first instance I would not disconnect and reconnect all those connectors.

- Check the ground wires in the area (should be highlighted in the service manual but a lot are easy to see).

Small probability something got shorted during your work. May just be a coincidence.

There may be a service manual floating around you can research (or maybe your local library subscribes to professional service which you can access in the library)..
