my experience buying a 2009 fit sport
Negotiation Tactics
Hey, Great Post.
When I bought my Fit I went in understanding that Honda does not have to budge off of MSRP, like most American Auto makers who have wide profit margins in thier vechicles, and low demand.
If you call the BBB they will tell you the exact price it costs Honda to build and ship thier vechicles. Thier margins are reasonable and thier demand is high, so there is no incentive for them to discount.
That does NOT mean that you cannot negociate. I went in and told the sales manager(not the salesmen, completly cut out the middle man) I knew what I wanted (The fit sport off of the showroom floor ^_^) and I had the credit to get it. After that all I said was, My pride will not let me pay MSRP, unless you earn my buisness. After that we negociated options. There is a large profit margin in options so dealers are more inclined to negociate for those, especially towards the end of the month when they want to make numbers(the fiscal month, not the actual month... go in around the 25th) So i got free tint all around(100 dollars normally), and a free car cover which is great for the mojave desert. (250 normally).
I did also have a coupon for 200 dollars off. Beware many coupons state you have to present it at the beginning of sale, however, this one did not and I was quick to point that out, so I presented it at the end of the sale.
Hope this was informative.

You called the Better Business Bureau and were able to get the price it cost Honda to build and ship their vehicles?
What part of jersey are you from?? Try Clinton Honda on rt.22 in annandale,nj they will find any fit you want. Or even pburg easton honda on rt.22 in phillipsburg,nj.(ask for pete poretta) they charge 500 over MSRP, but maybe they might drop that to make a sale.
thanks for all the comments... this site is great... knowledge is power.... and all that stuff.
i went to the dealer which had the car (see original post) and bought it at msrp.
the car (supposedly set aside for me in a swap between dealers), was in fact sitting there waiting to be sold to anyone who happened to want it.
the actual salesman was slick... all smiles while picking your pocket.
he tried to slide past me the optional $300 vin etching in return for 3 years $5000 cash back if the car was stolen and not found. i didnt see it until i was in the finance office. they removed the charge and reduced my interest rate.
it's funny because i actually started a thread about the "$300 for $5000" thing previously. but that was at a different dealer and i wasnt buying at that time.
meanwhile, when i rolled out of the dealer i saw there were no mats at all.
they were never offered and i had forgot to bring it up.
i went back monday to actually write them a check and they threw in the basic floor mats.
i strongly suggest if you walk into Kay honda in eatontown, nj, avoid david G. (salesman).
i have a 2009 fit sport and hopefully will not deal with a new car dealer for many years to come.
