When are you doing your first oil change?

I used to do new car oil changes at around 1500 miles, new bike oil changes sooner than that, 600 maybe.

When do you or did you do your first oil change?
Which oil?

Let the inflow of varied answers begin!

Honda told me at 3,750 miles. After that I can change the oil every time the oil life drops to 15%.

Honda uses a special break in oil. From page 198 of the owners manual (Break in Period):

Do not change the oil until the scheduled maintenance time.
I intend to follow the manual, change at 15% maintenance minder, and then switch to a high grade synthetic oil.

I agree 100%. Honda uses a special formulation of oils for break in. If you change it out early it will take drastically longer for the engine to break in properly. Use the maintenance minder as it is fairly advanced and accurate.

thats funny must be a honda thing then.
i also have a window sticker that says the
same. 3,750 miles weird huh

well anyway everyone can do what they want.
no one has to follow anyones directions.

IMO the sooner the better. it's all about peace
of mind. the money doesn't bother me either.
i'd rather have fresh oil then go till that minder
tells me. which is for ever by the way.

I did mine at 700 and now getting ready to do my
2k then 5k. at 5k i will go synthetic and do
oil changes ever 5k.
this is my way with new cars and i stand by it.
i've done it with over 4 new cars with no problems.

I'm at 20% at 4500mi right now. The minder will not say 15% will it? I've never seen 25,35,45, etc it's always ended with a 0. So why does everyone say 15 if there IS none? It's just going to go 20 to 10.........

I changed just the filter at 600 and will change to mobil 1 AND FILTER at 2500. I was thinking about the 0-20 oil but since I live in florida I will stick with the mobil 1 5-20 synthetic. I change the oil & filter @ 5000 then filter only at 10000 and oil and filter at 15000 etc...Have done this for years from my 1981 KZ750 to 2006 Suzuki Bugman 650 and all my Diesel cars/trucks in between. Your oil changes may vary...THUNDER

Same here.

Just wondering if I should go synthetic immediately at 5k or wait for 10k for that and let the engine break in a bit more. I've seen a Honda engine still breaking in up to 15k before its really really sweet.

I'm guessing that it'll take us 8-10 months to get to 5,000 mi. Should we get the oil changed sooner, or is it still OK to wait until the minder hits 15% ?

On my 2008 I followed the meter for the first change (10%-approx 3,500 mi) then I let it go to 0% which, I'm embarrassed to say, was 7900 miles! I don't feel too bad-Consumer Reports tested taxis in New York City for a 100,000 miles each, changing every 7,500 miles with no wear problems. Now I use Mobil 1 at 10% or 5,000 miles wcf. BTW, I had a brother-in-law who NEVER changed oil in any vehicle he ever owned, though he did add when needed, he also got divorced for various other similar errors in logic!

I noticed people mention going synthetic at 5,000 miles. Since I'm a newbie, I don't know the difference between synthetic and regular oil. Anyone car to enlighten me and what each would do to the car? Thanks!

Fa1 I have to call bullshit dude. Unless you are 100% highway I just don't see that. I'm 4600 and 20%, about to be 10 in another 100-200.

Synthetic is better and will last longer. But your oil monitor wouldn't know the difference and monitor it as regular oil. And will tell you to change it sooner, even if the oil is still good. You can always ignore the oil monitor and change the synthetic oil every 10K miles.

follow the manual at 15% change... and i would not recommend to change it with the Synthetic the first time.

and for those people that wanted to swap with a synthetic do it on your 3rd change.
