When are you doing your first oil change?
hmm... for some reason, the guy we know at honda is telling us to change the motor oil @600-1500.. this is because it is a brand new car and inside the engine has little metal scraps.. So, he is telling to change it early. is the true? i've read the entire thread but didn't find this information. (sorry if i didn't read some replies)

- don't change the oil early, as the high metallic content of the oil is supposed to protect the engine - and that's backed by the manual
- I think it's implied through the thread - if you do change the oil early, be prepared to change the oil more frequently throughout the life of the car.
Whether you believe this (or whether my interpretation is right) is another question. I'm not completely sure myself, as I don't think we'll get to the 15% level for well over 5k miles.
Oil Change
I have to wonder about when to change mine since even with synthetic I usually change it every 7500 or 6 months whichever came first. My 09 is ready to roll 6000 and it's still at 60%, granted 99% of my mileage is highway and I don't drive very fast. Down here in North Cackalaki the speed limit on 17 is still 55 mph. I got my first ticket since I was 16 two years ago down here doing 61 in a 55, no warning no hesitation here's a 120.00 fine have a nice day
. I have to admit I cracked 45mpg on my last trip back to work though (no it wasn't all down hill) 173 miles @ 45.1 mpg. If I'm reading right and these cars don't break in until around 10K this could be the best car I've ever owned.

If you're going to change the oil early be sure to change it with another break-in oil like this:
Royal Purple Engine Break-In Oil

Or will it?
I tend to make hard judgment of someone that gives terrible (and potentially costly) information. Coming from a Honda rep makes it even more hilarious.
Hopefully you found your answer though.

Or you could use an approximation of what Honda uses, good Dyno oil with extra Moly. I would use something like Schaefer's 5W-20 for the first oil change. Schaeffer Oil 3.0 | Industrial Lubricants | Diesel Fuel Additive | Synthetic Motor Oils
with all the tec that hand has in the FIT i think that no matter the miles the car will tell us when to change the oil honda tells us to get it done after 15% but at 0% well have to get the dummy light reset so when its 0% thats when my FIT well be getting her new oil and ill be using a K&N oil filter, air filter and Mobil1 full synthic for the rest of its life so common people its no longer about how many miles we have on the car but when we hit 15-0% on the meater
Well to all out there on this thread,,,,
I drive a very long distance to work and am currently at 8200 with 40% oil life still left. Expecting 12000 plus before my first oil change. I am an extreme commuter. I go highway 75 miles each way at 70-80 mph constant @ 2800-ish rpm for about 65 minutes. It is an easy commute/ thank the gods for NPR and ipods. The fit does a tiny bit of local driving but rare. I will take advantage of my dealer's free change at 15% and will then go synthetic at my third change or approximately 36000 (thanks to a dear friend who donated a case of Mobil 1 5w20). My brother-in-law used to work for one of the detroit three untill they eliminated his training division in November. He was the supervisor of a training center (they are factory trainers of dealer mechanics). He argues that this system is similar to Mercedes (a previous sister company) and given the type of driving I am doing I should sit back and enjoy. If any doubt my mileage/oil life I would be happy to post pics.

I have oil life and mpg envy. My '09 AT has leveled out at 29.2 mpg (75% city); moreover, at nearly half of your mileage, I, too, have 40% oil life left. I love my Fit, but I'm disappointed with the mpg. I'm guessing that the winter blend of gas in the Chicago area doesn't help, and I'm hoping that the change to synthetic oil soon will boost mpg. If not, then I know I could've gotten a lot more car for not much more $ with mpg in the mid 20s. Ouch...
Honda makes some of the longest lasting and best engineered cars on the planet... and here we have a bunch of people questioning the engineers that designed these great cars (and engines).
Change your oil when the computer tells you to change it. That's what the computer is there for. That's its purpose.
And I have to wonder why people are so willing to listen to a shade-tree mechanic, or their Uncle Cleatus when it comes to the care of an engine, but they won't adhere to the advice written in a book that came with the car, and that was written by the people who designed the engine...
Where does this logic come from!?!?!?

Are these the same engineers who designed our mpg computer, the one that's consistently 10% inaccurate?
Yep. And I'll take that advice, compared to internet hearsay that's 99% inaccurate, anyday.
