Moving Aux Input

I usually use my iPod with the USB connection, but there are times I don't have it (usually when running late for work!) and use my phone's media player with the 3.5mm Aux input. On the Sport w/o Nav, the Aux input is up on the dash (stupid place IMO). With Nav the input is down low, by the 12V socket, which I think is much better since it keeps the audio cable out of the way.

I may not do this, but I'm thinking of adding another Aux input to the panel where the 12V socket is. However, I'd like to know what I'm getting into before pulling the dash apart. In the photo below (courtesy of Inmyrem) I don't see where the Aux input comes into the head unit or USB module:

My thought was to install a Y cable between the original Aux jack and head unit, with the other leg of the Y going to the 12V panel, thus giving two Aux inputs (I don't need two, but I don't want to leave a hole in the dash, nor cut the stock Aux cable.) Alternatively, if I could buy the stock Aux cable I could just leave the original hanging and add the 2nd line. Of course, I'd rather put in a whole new head unit, amps, subs, etc. ... but not at this time.

So, to those who have removed the non-Navi head unit, where does the Aux input come in? Any pictures? I've already looked through the "Pictures of 09 Sport Stereo Wires and Cables" and don't see where the Aux line comes in.

+1 Rep for asking a question I would also like to know the answer to!

I would prefer a more hidden audio connection for my Garmin GPS, to hear voice commands, mp3s, and XM radio. A jack (or cable) at the rear of the center AC vent would be ideal for my install.

From what I saw when I was back there, I'm pretty sure it's part of the radio. That would be my best guess for that one. It looks like the Alpine radio Honda chose has a built-in AUX up front, so it's possible there is no cable being run because it's already built into the radio. This diagram kind of shows that as well. My girlfriend's new radio has an AUX port on the front and a USB port in the back. It is possible there is a wire, which may come from the main radio cable. That main cable goes down to a set of cables. They're coming from a white connector piece attached directly to the wall behind the steering wheel column. There are various other cables going into that piece. I doubt it though. I hope that helps!

Thanks for the diagram link. It all looks pretty integrated to me. I am not in a hurry to pull out those 13 clips clips to have a look.

Honestly, it's a pretty simple radio removal process. As mentioned in the threads that I posted that pic, there is one single screw holding the entire radio in place. That one screw caused me so much frustration until I found the removal instructions. Once that screw is removed, the whole thing just pops out. I would caution against using anything metal to pry it open. Maybe put some masking tape down around the edges as to not mar it.

The AUX jack is definitely integrated into the radio.

I was able to pop the radio loose, but I wasn't sure I could fit my big hands back there to reattach the cables, so I didn't remove them. There wasn't room to take a picture of the back.

My solution involved the judicious use of a rattail file to enable me to route the cable in just below the jack. For my application, I also routed it out to the left of the AC duct, where my GPS is mounted.

CBX - Your GPS is mounted on top to the left of the AC vents? Which point did the other side of the cable come out from?

Do you know if there was room to route the cable downwards towards the lower part of the console?

Rats! I need another picture. It comes out about 10mm from the left edge of the hump for the center AC vents.

It could easily be routed down to where the power port is.

That's ok - I was just trying to get an idea.

Do you know if its hard to get behind the power plug?

I'm wondering if I can hard wire a sat radio unit in - will need the power and the aux plus I need to run the antenna wiring hidden. It seems like its possible to do a pretty clean setup if I hide the wires using the access you did.

It does not look easy to access the power plug from the access panel above it.

I have not removed the console to check access below.

I want to run a power lead to the GPS, and will either run it from the fuse block, or tap in to the radio harness, which will make fuse placement difficult.

Here is where I brought the audio cable out;

Nice pics - that helps me picture it out a lot more. Is that a 7200 you have?... Do you have the XM antenna for it? Its one of the few GPS units with XM radio support... how is it as a GPS?

I'd like to get a GPS/XM all-in-one but it seems to be slim pickings for them.

Yes, Garmin StreetPilot 7200. Very versatile and configurable, with a 7" display. I have a couple of other pictures here;
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...solutions.html

I do have, and use, the GXM30 receiver/antenna for it. I have the XM Radio subscription with NavTraffic, to display traffic and weather conditions. I just set the antenna forward on the dash, by the defrost vents. I keep it portable because I also use it on a streetbike and pickup/camper. I also have a StreetPilot 2730, which is out on loan right now.

The GXM30 works with StreetPilots 2730, 2820, 7200, 7500, Zumo 550, and GPSMAP 376C. Some of those models have been discontinued. Many of Garmin's newest models lack XM compatability, which prevents me from considering purchasing them.
