How much did you pay for your Fit?
The $55 doc fee is kinda standard in CA, yeah you can negotiate it out by having them lower the cost of the car or whatever you like but $55 is the max doc fee allowed by CA law, hence every dealer charges it, hence you take it into consideration when negotiating for the car. Now if you want to nit pick, where you got had was the $29 electronic filing fee. So you're paying them $29 so that they have less hassle with paperwork, they should reduce the doc fee for saving them the hassle of having to fill out more paperwork. haha... I'm sure they told you something along the lines of you get your plates faster or something, at least that's what I was told before, I told them I don't need the plates fast, just so I can get a red light picture ticket faster... That fee is a scam but at least it was only $29.
Cash giving you a better price is a myth, dealers make more money if you finance through them because the bank gives them a kickback for using them.

'09 black sport AT (no add-ons)
16500 pre fees
55 document prep fee
29 opt dmv elect filing fee
183 lic. and title (calif.)
1407 taxes
18173 otd, cash
we got had for $55 (doc prep), which my wife let pass when i was out of the room entertaining our baby. but it was late, the kid was crying, the paperwork was done and half-signed and the check already handed over by the time i noticed so it slid. from what i've seen on this thread we made out okay. advice for new buyers: we used edmunds.com to get multiple dealers to pitch blind offers, then we called back and forth between the lowest two and made them bid down against each other. it's degrading and feels bad but it works. we also called the one dealership we had previously visited (just wanted to make sure our baby seat and stroller "fit" -- sorry) and asked them to beat; they matched. we had a lot of leverage from not being physically at the dealership, i think, so definitely haggle via phone and email if you can. the process involves a lot of dead time from checking with the boss and authorizing that price i don't think we can do it it's too low, so you might as well be at home watching march madness with a beer if you have to sit around waiting on them. i think paying cash might have saved us some money too b/c any confusion and paperwork is an opening for more fees that sound official and necessary but aren't.

Thats a great deal. I don't know how they were able to do that as its BELOW true dealer cost (including holdback) which is $16,637 for that vehicle. Oh, and don't complain about the $55 doc prep fee. Thats nothing either. I got stung for $180.
Excellent deal, are you sure you didn't get the MT for that price!

hah, i wish! my brother has an '08 sport mt and he says it's a fun drive. back in high school we had a manual acura legend my mom got from a police auction. the inside was wrecked and the sunroof leaked terribly but we've both been fans of the honda clutch ever since. my wife can't drive a stick, though, and the last thing we wanted was for her to be learning on a brand new transmission.
@moolman: thanks for setting me straight. i basically knew so little about car buying that for every itemized entry the dealer listed i was basically unsure if i was being took or being paranoid.
2009 Sport Automatic Invoice Price
The local dealer in Virginia told me he would sell me a 2009 Fit Sport Automatic "at invoice price". Can somebody tell me the invoice price on that vehicle and if I should expect to pay the $670 destination charge and their $288 processing fee or would those costs be negotiable?
The current invoice is $16,501. You will pay the $670 dest. charge also. That processing fee seems kind of high, I think. But, going with what you have:
16501 + 670 + 288 = 17459
17459 x .03 (VA tax) = 523.77 in tax
17459 x .015 (estimated fees) = 261.89 for title, tags, etc.
Estimated Total = $18,244.66 as your Out the Door (OTD) price. This is the price you want to negotiate. I would walk away if they offer you anything higher than $18,300 OTD.

I just received an email back from another dealer. They have the one I want and they said "There is a 600 markup on that particular car."....Uh, no. The other dealer started at 16,355....which is LESS than invoice.
I'll pass on paying the markup.

2009 Fit A/T, Base, Blue Sensation, bought Friday
$15,500 : price before fees, including destination
$295.90 : processing fees
$472.49 : 3% Virginia sales tax
$48.75 : tags and title
$16,317.14 : out-the-door
Also included were the splash guards and floor mats, and pinstriping (which I had them remove when I realized it had already been applied before I looked at the car, yuck).
I had them toss in the cargo tray ($103, I looked for it online but couldn't find it much cheaper after shipping). I was going to get an aftermarket keyless entry and have it put in but there was a typo on their options sheet -- they forgot to include labor for it so I got it for $58 installed instead of $145
I probably could have shaved off a few dollars here and there but all in all I'm satisfied with the price I got. Purchased it with a whopping 4 miles on it; I love driving this car!

Well, I took the plunge. Although it will take a month to get here, I ordered my Blue Sensation, manual fit sport. I am so happy.
It was 16,355 plus taxes and titles and all that stuff. So about 17,400 out the door. Seems to be on par with what a lot of you paid.

Is it easy to get out of dealers charging you destination fee's? I am looking at a Fit Sport / Manual. There is one at my nearby dealership, I am planning to start negotiating around 15,750 w/ destination fee's included.
lol, didn't you try and negotiate at all?
