Ever have something go through your windshield?

Happened to me last week. Scared the bejebus out of me. A truck traveling opposite me on a rural two lane highway clipped a dead tree limb and sent pieces into my path. One baseball bat size piece was headed straight at me and I had to swerve to far left in my lane to take it on passenger side of the windshield. The limb came through the window and shards of glass exploded all over the interior of my car. Something hit me in the right eye (believe it was a foot long splinter from the limb) and I found my self swerving back to the right, feeling for the shoulder of the road and stopping my car with both my eyes closed from what i thought were glass shards in my eyes. Found my cell and called 911. Had a great trip to the Emergency Room and fortunately I did not receive any lacerations to either eye. Ended up with a nice shiner on my right eye and a couple of days of gravely, itchy eyes. Here are some pics for clicks.

The damage: Windshield, hood, right front fender, dashboard, windshield whipper arm (both), various trim pieces, labor and paint close to $3000.

My wife went to the accident site and found it on the road. It had glass shards embedded in it as well as some faint red paint. A foot long splinter was in the car along with a lot of small splinters and glass covered entire interior, there was even some in the trunk.

Before pics when new.

Glad you came through it OK. Talk about a "freak" accident!

Pay specific attention to your A-pillar repairs on the right side. That'll probably be the toughest piece of body work on the whole job. Also, ensist on a Honda windshield. I'm sure they'll write for an aftermarket glass if you don't speak up.

Good luck with it all.

Wow, you were lucky not to be injured more seriously, or worse. Cars can be replaced!

Holycrap! Glad your eyes are ok. Damn that's scary.

Is your a-pillar bent pretty badly or just on the surface?

If bent, A-pillar damage can lead to totaling the car because the structural ridigity is lost.

I've never seen so much damage from something kicked up by a passing vehicle. A few years ago, my wife had a windshield break from a flying rock kicked up by a truck on a rural 2-lane road. When we called the insurance company to report a claim, they said, "We can probably repair it." I said, "I don't think so -- there is broken glass on the dashboard."

This sort of thing is one of my nightmares as a motorcycle rider, and why I always wear a full-face helmet.
