Proper Use of E-Brake

This is how it's done

I for one, leave my e-parking-hand brake thinghy on all the time. There is nothing like SAFETY FIRST!!!

The added bonus of doing this is that I am able to roast marshmallows off of the back wheels when I get to my destination.

Nice and toasty!

Old thread, but I tried the recommended procedure here (brake, stop, neutral, e-brake, release brake, then park) and my doors no longer unlock when I shift into park.

Anyone else have this happen?

If I can force my foot off the brake pedal before putting it in park tonight, I'll report back on the unlock feature.

Edit: doors won't unlock shifting to park with foot off brake pedal.

I don't doubt this is recommended somewhere up-thread (I didn't see it), and I can see the desire to avoid putting any pressure on the AT's lock-up mechanism, but I think you're over analyzing it. The lock-up mechanism is there to keep the car from rolling away. Applying the parking brake before putting it in park will relieve most of the pressure on the steepest inclines.

This is what the manual says

If your vehicle has an automatic
transmission, set the parking brake
before you put the transmission in
Park. This keeps the vehicle from
moving and putting pressure on the
parking mechanism in the
transmission.
If I'm parking on a flat protected area (like my garage floor) I'll skip putting on the handbrake. Give it a break as it were; its most important function is in the event of hydraulic failure i.e. as an emergency brake.

Yeah that's kind of annoying!

I think so too, but lately after putting the car in park, ebrake, then let go of brake. The car sometimes rolls for a bit until I hear it catch on what I assume was the transmission. Definitely didn't do this when I got it!

Maybe I just need to adjust the ebrake to make up for worn pads.

If you want to follow this procedure as written above, you can change the auto-unlock setting to unlock when you turn the key to off. For those who forgot about that, the details are in the manual.

Order is as follow
Apply foot brake, place in park with foot brake applied, pull on handbrake and then release foot brake. All the car load will be on the hand brake/Ebrake and not on the tranny. That way you avoid the clunking or hard shift out of park when you are on an incline surface. Safe the tranny.
