Thumbs up My mileage story

My Fit is better on gas than the window sticker says, check this out. I recently went back home to Detroit and put the cruize on 75 mph and got 35.1 mpg using the calculator, but the obc was and is only a half a mile per gallon off, always. On the way home I decided to try something, driving into Chicago I put the cruize on the 70 mph and got 39.4 mpg, remember, that's going into "the windy city". The car had about 2k on it at the time, so I wonder if its going to get even better than it does already, I'm very happy with the mileage aspect of the Fit

I've only run a couple tanks through mine but am seeing slightly better mileage in mixed driving than the EPA estimate. I can see how the freeway mileage in reality is much higher than the 33mpg mine is supposed to get... usually ~38mpg on cruise. I love it so far... slightly better than the 12mpg I was getting out of my lifted wrangler unlimited .

That seems really good for CC @ 75mph. I've only run two tanks through my Fit so far but I've seen 37 and 40 calculated. My avg mpg was a little more than 1 mpg off (avg: 39.2 calculated: 40.3.) It's at least in the ballpark. Though I don't usually use cruise, I took a 40 mile highway drive yesterday at 70-80 mph and had the avg reading 47.0mpg by the end. With less than 1k miles I'm pretty satisfied with its FE potential!

Thumbs up

The next time I go home I'm going to put the cruize on 70mph and we'll see if the "windy city" blows up my numbers more! Being a gearhead its unusual to talk mileage but it does count when your just getting from point a to b, right

I forgot to update this, so here it goes. Two weeks ago I went back home to Detroit and got 38.4 going there and 42.6 mpg coming back to Chicago, the car is amazing and I really wonder how in the hell the EPA got 33 mpg on this car, were they driving into a 40 mph constant wind and/or going 85 mph

I have yet to get under 34.6 MPG average (hand calc) on a tank. I do a lot of highway driving and have gotten as high as 38.0 on a tank

If your car is really new your mileage will go up, well, if you use your cruize and keep it at 70 mph like I do it should but then again your in N.C. more hilly than here in the mid-west for sure

Its going to be interesting to see how the mileage is going to be affected, if at all, with my K&N typhoon intake, we'll see and I'll keep you guys posted. I did add a Magnaflow muffler to my car and the mileage went up from mid 38mpg to 42.6 mpg but I'm pretty sure its a fluke though....right, hmmm

Lightbulb Another trip to the D from Chicago but....

....with a twist! This time I've added the K&N typhoon intake and had to use the a/c, so how would it do?

Going to the D I got 39.3 mpg, up 1.3 mpg from last time. The differences here were the addition of the K&N Typhoon intake, a/c on and getting gas a little further down the road.

Coming back, I got 42.0 mpg but took one freeway back home instead of the different ones I used last time (I-94 straight thru instead of I-696/I-96/I-69) but the speed remained the same, 70 mph in the right lane with the cruize on.

We'll see how it goes in the fall when I take a couple more trips, one down to the Dragon and I'm sure one or two more back home. We'll see how those trips do but I may add synthetic oil to the car by then and if I do, it will be noted

Do you guys think the use of a/c really affects the cars mileage on the freeway?

Here's my experience this weekend.
Bit of a disclaimer .. I do drive quite aggressive
.

Went from NJ to Montreal this weekend.. 3 adults, bags/luggage, AC on and off, 75-85 averaged 35 MPG. That includes in city driving, although it wasn't much. We took 87 all the way thru NY, which is constant hill climbing

My buddy behind me in a v6 charger spent @ 50 bucks more than me =] love the fit..

Klasse - I can't say the effects of A/C are worth worrying about in the FIT. Remember the power steering is electric and the condenser is tiny. I'm always driving with it on - I like conditioned air even in the winter.

You're defiantly in the flat lands, might explain the better averages.

I just traveled from Albany NY to Bangor Maine much like your trip hondaFORlife. 36.5MPG by the numbers 70MPH w/ A/C. Not quite as aggressive as you I guess. That's the turnpike average. Once I pulled off at Portland and found US1 I averaged 39MPG much like the flatlander That certainly surprised me in a delightful way and I'm running a MT Sport.

Well in the fall we'll be heading down to Tennessee, so that trip will have me using no a/c and I'll figure the mileage out before I get into the hills, who knows, I might hit 45 mpg

I'm going to try using the paddles to downshift instead of the brakes, that's about the extent of my "hypermiling", I'm not shutting off the engine at long lights or trains, the cost of a new starter down the road isn't worth it IMO.

Any updates on your experience with the Typhoon?

Just got back from running the same trip quoted above back in June. Total trip mileage around 820miles.

I'm now pulling 40MPG over the entire trip, again w/ AC for a good part of the way. Driving habit/style hasn't changed and this trip included 3hrs of Central Maine Back Road driving as well.

Mileage is now kicking 9K and I'm thinking the FIT has broken in to it's optimum MPG. FF Oil life is @ 30%

Very happy - Maine was wonderful.

I've made my second trip with the typhoon and it hasn't hurt the mileage one bit, actually it may have improved it, check this out. So this past weekend I netted these results:

Going from Chicago to Detroit...38.9 mpg (previous best was last month 38.5 mpg...and before that was 38.0 mpg)

Going back home to Chicago...41.2 mpg (previous best is 42.8 mpg)

Driving style is always the same, drive in the right lane and drive the speed limit, pass when needed. Same route, for the most part, but its still freeway and same speed. Its the mid-west so there's no major elevation change.
I've noticed it doesn't matter with the a/c on either, I had to put it on today as it started to get warmer in the afternoon and watched the mpg gauge with the a/c on and it didn't change.

Those concerned with getting the K&N typhoon and it affecting driveability, don't

93 Shell

Per Silver Bullet's advice I've tried running 93 in the Fit and my mileage has gone up around town, I've gotten 36.5 the last 2 tanks and its been getting a little colder here too. I must say though that it didn't go up on the freeway trip down to the Dragon going through Indiana though. The best I got there was 39 mpg and used the cruize most of the time at 70, some trips up to 75+ but nothing too long. The real test will be when I go back home and take the same route the same way at the same speed, I alway use the cruize the whole way. I didn't going to the Dragon because I was trying to keep up with the group

Winter blend sucks

I went home last weekend and got 34.5 mpg going to Detroit and 36.5 coming back to Chicago but on that part of the trip I was going 75 mph because I was bummed out at the mileage drop coming in, so I said WTF

I'll be driving to Delaware and back next week, ~800 miles each way. One driver, no passenger, minimal luggage, same route. This should give me a chance to determine what is the best real world (not hypermiling) highway mileage I can expect from my Sport AT. The only variables I plan to test will be premium vs regular gas, one tank of each in both directions, same person filling the tank the same way at each fill. I'm expecting 38-39 mpg.

Yes, yes it does... I was getting some knock while tuning my 2L tonight on the way home from work and I hide to lock in open loop and take a degree for every 1.5k from peak timing and enrich .2-.5pts AFR from 4000-8.5k. I think SilverBullet may be on to something about Shell which I usually go, the same one no less, for consistency in tune.. or a test introduction of E15.

I am thinking that I may have just had some water condense in the tank and caused misfire... *end rant*

So how long have you been running 93 now? I bet your ECUs fuel trims, in particular the Long Term FTs, have been adjusted to your driving and better gas.

Since you keep such good track would you consider switching back from 93 to 87 at some point in the next few weeks to see if there is any tangible difference?

I would be curious to see how the Fit's ECU responds in practice vs. the theory.

The idea being that because there is not only more fuel required by the colder, denser air, but more fuel required because the 87 is less knock prone and the ECU is trying to slow the combustion.

You might even be able to feel the first couple instances of knock-retard cutting the balls out of your part-throttle/high-load response. For instance when riding out 2nd and 3rd gear to get on a busy highway from a short on-ramp.. as well as general performance below ~3.5k in town.

42 MPG I can believe, since I took mine from Chicago to SouthBend this Summer, and averaged a little over 42 MPG.

I think its the colder denser air combined with semi- winter gas that brought down your mpg. I put shell in and got 33 when all summer I got 39-40mpg. I filled up with BP and mpg is up. This time of year they take out the aromatics for butanes which can take away mpg at idle and acceleration but have noticed BP averages better than shell at all engine loads. I expect in Dec. when the real cold hits and they go full winter gas my mpg will drop to 35-37 mpg depending on warm ups and snow. My car average highway is 36 so in mix driving I am getting 39-40 summer 10 percent and 2-5 better in winter I hope. Here is a few tips on hypermiling. 100+ Hypermiling / ecodriving tips & tactics for better mpg - EcoModder.com I dont agree with all of it, esp. turning off motor at any time when car is in motion but theres a lot of good tips.
