1st Oil Change at 5K?

I just picked up my new 2010 Fit Sport today. The salesman told me to do the first oil change at 5,000 miles, and go by the maintenance minder after that. The manual specifically says not to perform the first oil change before the indicator comes on. So which is it? I would think doing at 5K for the first one would be prudent.

Would you rather follow the manual that honda specifically made for our car or follow some salesman who barely has any knowledge about cars. All they know is how to sell.

Thanks for the info. I'm still new here. Will try a search before posting in the future.

Don't worry about searching first. If you have a question...ask away! Believe me, your question isn't the first to be asked multiple times (not being sarcastic). Any how, I did my first oil change at 20% and 7,000 miles and as somebody already said, do what the manufacturer recommends with THEIR product and not some salesman.

Trust me...salesmen know virtually nothing about the cars they are selling, especially the mechanical bits. Follow the manual and I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for the explanation.

hate to bump this thread, but yeah. my minder went off at close to 9000 km. lol. my salesman was (looks around cautiously) a complete idiot who wanted to sell me on a insight vs the Fit.

I got mine changed at ~6000 miles (30%). I would have waited till the indicator went off but I had planned a long road trip so I just went ahead and changed it before.

I changed my oil for the first time at about 1600 miles. I have no way to know if it will help 15 years from now when I sell the car to the scrap yard.

Hey, you're in SC? oooh, have you ever eaten at a shop called "Hot Dog Heaven"? It's funny, because it's really a Chinese food shop!

It's my uncle's shop.
