How did you figure out I was in Hecker?

Just finished my 4th tank. Hit 38.5 mpg. I love it. Learning how to drive and maximize in the city. cruising about 60-65 on the two lanes. Passed a few people on the two lanes. The pep for 50 to 70 was nice. I have about 1400 miles on it now. Could the increase in MPG be coming from really breaking in?

I can't wait till June and our first trip. We have to drive about 300 miles to get there.

Nope. I worked in St. Clair County for many years. Now I live in the country in Tennessee Township, McDonough County, Forgottonia.

That's 60 miles from Quincy, 75 miles from Peoria, 100 miles from the Quad Cities, and 100 miles from Springfield. Maybe that means nowhere.

We're from South St. Louis.

I'm seeing more and more Fits in the county all the time. Still can't find a tire for it anywhere around here though. I don't get the strange looks at the gas pumps like I did when we first got ours in January, 2009. My $30 fillups look a lot better than the $100+ tankfuls going into the pickups and SUVs around here.

Cheers.

I found tires at my local Sam's. 175 / 65 R15 84S They are special order, but they are listed. I have the base model. Didn't find the sport tire listed. 185 / 55 R16 83H

I actually run around S STL fairly often. I have many friends in the area. Great places to eat at also.

My wife just got home from an 1800 mile trip from Maine to PA in our new Fit. It only had about 300 miles on it when she left. Mostly hi-way, with some city driving in and around Philly. A/C on for quite a bit of the trip. It was reading 35.7mpg when she pulled in. I'm pretty happy with that.

ummm, have you figured it out mathematically? That readout is only an estimation of what has been going on since the last time the trip minder was reset. granted, it is pretty good sometimes, but i would not take it as gospel.

It's more than an estimation. The ECU knows how much fuel is used (fuel injection metering) and how much distance is traveled. It may differ +/- 1mpg from manually calculating it, but a lot of the difference is attributable to different fills at different pumps. I've stopped calculating manually (did it obsessively over the 1st year). The car's computer is consistently 1mpg high in my case. This is on an 09 after being flashed with the corrected fuel consumption maps by Honda.

PSA: don't top off your tanks; that extra click or two may damage your car's fuel system and doesn't help the environment.

Sure, you can have inconsistencies in a manual approach, but these monitors are not perfected yet. Filling the tank varies. Especially if you are not topping off. The speed of the pump will cause overflow/shutoff sooner if the pump is going faster. As I have checked the mileage manually versus our monitor I have found them to be within 1 mpg every time so far. If I keep finding this I'm gonna quit calculating. There goes on of my favorite hobbies, LOL

No, but only because someone forgot to save me the receipts. But I did manually calculate the first tank, and found the computer underestimated the mileage by about 1mpg. I figured it would probably be ok to believe it for the trip. But now that it is back in my power, I will verify the next couple tankfuls just to be sure.

Once you get the chip reflashed the computer is pretty close. I know some people want to get it down to a gnat's anal pore, but really…

What is this "reflashing" of which you speak? I'm new here and to my fit. Thanks!

Hah Hah. My 2009 Fit Sport's mpg display told me I was getting like 45 mpg. My pencil told me differently. Honda finally came out with a service bulletin on it. My dealer "never heard of it" when I asked for it, but checked and did it. My display is accurate now, or accurate enough for me. I don't know when they fixed it at the factory. If your display is pretty close to your pencil, don't worry about it. If your display reads like an ad for one of those magnets you put next to your fuel line that gets you 100 mpg, check with your dealer.

Cheers.

I was taught, I was taught a lot of things that are no longer right! That to fill the tank let it shut off automaticly once then lightly fill for two more auto shut offs.

This was the accepted or proper way to do it at one time. I noticed that if I do the last two auto shut offs that a small amount of gas was wasted, If I only do 2 shut offs no gas is wasted. In other words I fill holding the handle tight, let it shut off. Then lightly hold the handle for a second shut off.

Right or wrong, what is your source of info? JIm 0311

On a sealed fuel system, if you overfill, you are using the area designed for expansion. As the fuel in your tank warms after being drawn from cool underground storage tanks expansion may compromise fuel system seals or force liquid fuel into the evaporative recovery chamber, neither of which is ideal.

Plus there's google.

edit: Plus there's your owner's manual (2010, page 199):
4. Stop filling the tank after the fuel nozzle automatically clicks off. Do not try to "top off" the tank. Leave some room for the fuel to expand with temperature changes.

It only applies to 2009 Fits before some build date. 2010 and later got the correct flash at the factory.

On '09s they shipped with bad data tables that resulted in the mpg display showing around 15% higher than actual mpg. People were really pleased with their Fits' mileage back then. You had to ask the dealer to apply the new flash. My guess is they didn't want to alarm people by doing it without their asking or knowledge.

Well thank you very much I'm slowly trying to read the owners manual, It's difficult to do, real men don't read instructions. Probably would have skipped right over how to fill a tank. I mean what kind of idiot does not know how to fill a tank JIm 0311

It takes all types to make the world go round...
...and the world is spinning without any issues.....

Think of how much money could be saved if gas stations didn't need to have "no smoking" signs all over the place.

Idiots have their place... usually it's on Maurey, but they do have their place.
