Fuel economy WOW

Holy bat guano Batman! 34.69 MPG Just did my first fill up at 273 mi. Almost all short trip, less than 5 mi, in town driving. 2011 fit base with automatic. This is Florida AC is always on!

273 mi ÷ 7.868 gal = 34.69 MPG

Does my calculator need a new battery? Does the gas pump need to be re calibrated? Is my odometer broke? Do I not know how to figure MPG?

Befor you ask. Pumped gas till pump clicked off, then lightly put in more fuel till second auto shut off. Gauge showed about 1/4 tank when I stopped for fuel. Even if this is off by 20% I'd still be impressed!

Yup. Mine's in my sig but will be right around 38mpg when I hit 2 years this August.

When I read the OP's post the first time, I thought they were disappointed at the start. Good thing I finished the whole post.

I have a 2010 Fit Sport Auto... 80% city / 20% freeway returns 30 - 31 MPG in average. I think the base Fit is lighter so sound like you definitely get better MPG than mine..

Nah... you don't have to drive like a granny. Just knowing when to conserve momentum and when you really NEED to use the happy pedal will make a world of difference. My commute is about 20 miles of country road and about 6 miles of country twisties each way. I cruise along at 50+mph on the country roads and when I hit those twisties, I'm maintaining my speed through the curves, up and over the hills using the gas when needed (and desired).

City driving is a relative term. LA vs NYC vs Houston... all different, yet all city. Likely not the difference in weight (because it isnt' that much) but more of the conditions (including climate, etc...)

The in town driving can vary a lot. I say town not city because I am in a small town, N Ft Myers FL not a city like NYC or LA. Our blocks are long and not a stop sign every 1000 feet. Traffic is lighter now because the snow birds migrated north.

I really wanted to buy a Soul. But after reading the forums many were complaining about poor mileage and other issues.

I'm thrilled with this mileage, I was looking for 27 maybe 28 around town. Thanks JIm 0311

Over in the UK we pay $9.00 for unleaded gas, the 1st thing to do is reduce weight in your Fit, so remove all the gubbings form the boot, remove luggage rack, fill with quality Gas here we favour Shell not supermarket gas.
Finally check the condition of the air cleaner always change very 12months.
My Gas Mileage ?
Well I average 46mpg but thats town B Roads and imperial measures, on the Motorway 50mpg +

PS I average 360 miles per tank fill to fill which costs me £46.50 = $78.00

I don't envy you guys out there but honestly, I think we're heading that direction and have to understand we've got it pretty good compared to europe. The down side is I think we do more actual commuting on an average and use mass transit less.

I agree on lightening up the vehicle being important. I'm getting almost the exact same economy as you (46 imperial is 38 US).

How often do you fill up?

Well it was meant to be funny but since you want to play... Your wrong as my commute is 27 miles 1 way and of that my average MPG with A/C (an AT car) is 33.8 so considering my commute is 18 hwy and 9 cty miles i am sure you can do the math. I drive this vehicle like i drive all my other ones and that is the MPG.

If i drove like a granny i am sure that would go up (hence the remark/joke). I also do tons of driving with the kids sports stuff so my city MPG is what is hurting it. Still not going to complain though as the Fit does very good.

PS- my BMW with a 2.3 6cyl gets nearly as good highway MPG as the FIT and that car weighs 1000lbs more.

I don't have any gubbings or do I can you describe one? I live in SW Florida so I do not wear boots

Brand name gas Hmmmmm

3. "My gas isn't better for your car; it's just more expensive."
Oil companies spend lots of money explaining why their gas is better than the competition's. Chevron's gas, for example, is fortified with Techron, and Amoco Ultimate is supposed to save the planet along with your engine. But today, more than ever, one gallon of gas is as good as the next.
True, additives help to clean your engine, but what the companies don't tell you is that all gas has them. Since 1994, the government has required that detergents be added to all gasoline to help prevent fuel injectors from clogging.
State and local regulators keep a close watch to make sure those standards are met; a 2005 study indicated that Florida inspectors checked 45,000 samples to ensure the state's gas supply was up to snuff, and 99% of the time it was.
"There's little difference between brand-name gas and any other," AAA spokesman Geoff Sundstrom says.

At one stage I was doing 25k pa, nowadays just 8k, so filling up every 2 weeks or so is a real treat as I sold a Subaru Outback and replaced it with my 2012 Model Jazz EX !
Quite a change but we have owned several GD models in year gone by.
For local journeys I plan a route out to maximise the use of the car, but I prefer using my 30 year old bicycle for going into the village.

Incidentaly I noticed you have Fit Sport I am keen to locate a rear spoiler - an item I cannot get a US dealer or supplier to quote on shipping to the Uk. I'm after a Milano Red US spec for my Jazz......

Nah... knew it was off the cuff. Others may not have and I wanted to drop out an example of getting good MPG but not having to drive like there's a buick in front of you. My Altima (in the summer ) was around 31-32mpg and that was a 3.5L V6 Lifetime avg on that was around 27mpg which was just under what most were getting with the 4cyl.

My "city" driving is about 25 miles/week of 30 stoplights about 1/4 of a mile apart. (I'd say I hit about 50% of them green but usually all in a row, then the other 50% is stop/go) That said, it's less than 10% of my commute which is why it doesn't impact my economy that much. The few "mountains" that I have to go over usually drop me .5mpg but that is more due to the fact they are made up of uphill banked twists & turns which are fun. That loss is made up on the flats. I could probably do better on economy if I took my winter route all summer long... but what's the fun in that?

I have to admit, I've never been about raw power (which is why I didn't mind the 150hp drop) but more about the driving experience. I love throwing it into the corners and coming out almost as fast yet still being extremely easy on the Wallet.

There is a difference between brands and grades. Yes it is a oil product but that where the difference start. It ashame that the reporter didn't any research before throwing that out. They can get fuel from the top or bottom of the tank and then there is the wash out that can be mixed in as long as its with in final spec. of less than 1 percent per gallon. Then there is additives that the minimum amount and types of additives.

I drive like an idiot, quick acceleration, slightly over the speed limit, rev to 5500 more than once on my commute, and I still return 31 MPG. Its like this car was built to be driven fast, its just so much fun to give it the beans.
