Clackety Clack!

I have a 2009 Fit Sport with 31K and manual tranny. Yesterday when turning left or coasting I hear and feel a sound as if I am driving over a boardwalk. The sound goes away when braking. It doesn't matter what speed or rpm. Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

How are your brake pads?

This may seem like an odd question, but have you checked the engine oil?

LOL

no but really it could be several things
1: loose lugnuts
2: bad CV joint (or bad boot and all the grease is gone)
3: bearing in the trans

give more info (front, rear, right, left, under foot, etc...)

From the front for sure. Can't say left or right, but noise stops when I turn the wheel to the right. Oil fine, brake pads probably due.

Is there something stuck in the wheel well? or the wheel? take the tires off to clear any possible debris.

when my tires rub my liner, I get a similar sound (tire hits a corner edge, so it's tread-gap-tread-gap-tread). have you changed anything up there? bigger tires?

You've got a few good possibilities, I would say loose lugs or something stuck up in there, what have you found??

HOLY CRAP! I just went out to take the wheels off and have a look see and all the lug nuts except for the locking one WERE GONE! Someone tried to steal my wheels. Lock those wheels, friends!

So how long did you drive it that way? Pretty scary, huh. Must have been amateurs - a pro would have made short work of the locking lug as well, or never even tried. Or someone is simply messing with you...

I had it up on the highway for about 20 miles. It was only one wheel. Super scary!

Years back I once drove 350miles with the lugs loose on a front wheel. Was convinced it was a front wheel bearing. Shop I took it to thought the same till they put it up on the lift. All the lugs were loose.

Dumb but obvious question: Any chance of that damaging the bolt? If the wheel was moving enough to clank, it's certainly possible the bolt was bent and/or weakened.

i disagree with this statement (to a degree) i had my crx stolen and the theives had it for four days, took my turbo, frontmount, nos setup, subs/deck, etc. basically stripped my car but left the motor (fully built d16z6) <-- still running it today, and i had kosei K1's (lightweight) they tightened the shit out of the three other lugs and obviously tried the pound on socket method, but since the honda locks are smooth round the socket couldn't grab anything - so i got the
chassis w/motor and wheels were still on the car - lol - to this day i don't hesitate using factory locks on my hondas!

good point but lug studs are really hard - but if your new lugs went on ok and didn't give you trouble you're probably ok

too bad there isn't a prize, besides i'd deserve it ALL, the OP obviously didn't see your answer in a thread he didn't write, and you my friend didn't pipe up here - lol
