HA! I wish! have a 2011 sport auto, never seen over 27mpg no matter what i try! Honda ignores it, says all is fine, functioning properly, but they arent the ones having to fill up every 260-280 miles per tank!!!! Still love my fit, cmonnnn repair shop!!!

My per tank averages have been mostly upper 20s (maybe 28 or 29). My lowest was probably 25 mpg.

However, on this tank, even doing deliveries is currently at 35.7 (on the indicator) with about 250 miles on the trip. With my indicator usually about 1 MPG off... I'm guessing it would end at just under 35. Judicious use of cruise control every chance I get, much slower acceleration than I normally do... and most importantly, shutting off the engine as I am walking the food up to the house. However, I did burn off about 0.3 MPG because I made a mistake with two orders. Gave the wrong bag of food to the first delivery of those two, rushed to swap the wrong bag when I noticed at the second delivery.

Unfortunately, 27 is normal... if you're doing lots of city driving with a... less than steady foot. Lead foot during acceleration, "pulsing" foot when you think you're going at a steady speed.

My father and my brother-in-law drive with a pulsing foot. Instead of keeping the foot in a set position to stay at a set speed... they gas to speed up, back off, then gas again... essentially, alternating between accelerating and coasting. I know this, because when I ride with them, I get nauseous and stomach aches if it goes long enough.

edit: You might do this unconsciously, as my father and brother-in-law both deny doing this. I wonder if you can tell by watching something hanging off the rearview mirror (small weight on a looped fishing line?).

The trick I use is for good gas mileage is this:.... Block out all distractions Daniel-san. Maintain at least +5mph on flats. Look at the instant mileage gauge and adjust your gas input so that it is one or two bars bellow 40mpg. This will keep your speed from dropping to fast going uphill and on the downhill you will gain enough momentum to go up the next hill without inputting anymore throttle. I'm getting 38-40mpg city right now and I drove a Prelude SH before getting my fit so I understand the need to drive fast. Just realize that the amount of power/gas you need rises exponentially the faster you go.

If I go about 60 MPH, I can get 39. But that's the best I've ever done. Changing the oil helps. I ran my first oil right to 10,000 miles when the wrench icon comes on. I've been stuck around 34 MPG. Now my car is getting 38 fairly effortlessly. So I do think oil life plays a big role in that motor.

I have similar experience.

In town driving, averaging at 35 – 37/mpg (stop and go). Freeway (60-70 mph) averaging at 40-43/mpg.

I drove from San Francisco to LA and my average dropped down to 35-37/mpg again – probably because I was driving averaging 80-85 /mph.

That's why you get bad gas mileage. Gotta maintain steady pressure on that gas pedal.

I have been averaging about 37mpg so far (nearing 22,000 miles, and I bought the car april 20th, 2011). 5 speed in it and I drive reasonably. If I really flog it I can get down to 33mpg. Where I am though it is mostly 45-55mph and ocatioanl stop lights.

Is that out the door with taxes and everything? I payed 15,850 for a new 2011 last year before taxes. (I know, it was sticker, but it was the last one in the north east in the color I wanted with a 5 speed).

600 miles on mine and it stays between 34-37mpg. Parts of Nevada has 75mph freeways where everyone is doing 85 so that brings it down to 33ish.

What he ^ said.

My daughter was averaging 38 and I took her Fit for a drive (09 Sport auto) just to see how good I could do.

I filled up and zeroed the mpg gizmo. Over a 45 mile course through a couple small towns and back roads I averaged 54mpg. Once she saw that she tried to beat it. She dropped me off at the airport and did a round trip run including some freeway time (that hurts because the speed limit is 65 and the mileage drops bad over about 53) but she went slow on the freeway watching the mileage bar closely. She averaged 52 mpg on a 65 mile trip.

These cars can get great mileage if you baby the throttle and slow down going up hills, gain speed back rolling down hills, and never use the brakes (coast as much as you can!).

It may be unrealistic to actually drive that way, let alone unsafe (driving 53 on a 65 mph road) but I think the learning experience of throttle control and seeing the gains that are possible have raised my daughter's overall mileage.

And if she ever finds herself 100 miles from the next fuel station and left with only two gallons of gas in her car, she may be able to make it using these techniques.
