M/T Grinding Gear
I been having a problem for a few months, I've notice that my fourth gear grinds almost every time unless I put it in really really SLOW. Iam thinking on taking it to the dealer. I was wondering if anyone else is or has had that problem. and yes I'm putting the clutch all the way in.

I've never had trouble getting into 4th. 1st is a bit tricky unless you're moving very slowly, 2nd kicks up a small fuss occasionally, and 5th requires a reach, but 3rd and 4th always engage without complaint. Take it to the dealer.

how many miles are on the transmission?
when was the last time you changed the fluid?
Before you take it into the dealer make sure all the fluids are to spec because you dont want them to have an excuse to void your warranty in the tranny due to negligence.
IIRC the fluid needs to be changed every 30k and even 15k if you want to be anal about it... I just bought a 2012 Sport M/T so I'm not 100% sure that was the service interval on my DC2 and AP2
Fluid changed has smoothed out the shifting in my cars when it has gotten around that time. you notice the notchiness get worse, then after the fluid change it smoothens back up. Makes sense lol

recommended first change is at 60k. but if your transmission gets worked hard, change it more frequently.
i personally feel no difference each time i change mine. it feels exactly the same, all the time.

A bit of a hijack, but not wholly irrelevant: I've seen 30k, 60k, and never-for-the-life-of-the-car as recommended fluid-change intervals for the MT. The owners manual that comes with my '09 Sport is unclear on what to do in this regard (with the MT--they do discuss the AT, however). Can anyone point to an official statement from Honda regarding the proper interval? Thanks.

Are you sure it's not somewhere in the maintenance minder section? I have an 07 and it does state it specifically in there. It talks briefly about other maintenance schedules that aren't included by the maintenance minder.

Typically you change the tranny fluid when Code #3 appears, unless the sub note applies and you are driving an AT.
AT tranny's are a bit more temperamental than manual. That, plus the joy of shifting, is why I avoid AT's.

What you're seeing is actually a sub note to code #3.

Ah, so I'll just wait for a 3 code and have them change the fluid then. Thanks for the clarification.
Out of curiosity, has anyone had a 3 code come up on an MT, and at what mileage did it happen?

1st gear is supposed to be like that, has been in all the manual cars i've driven, from german to japanese.. my VW had lock outs in 2nd also to prevent over revving when the engine knew it would exceed the rev limiter.

Grinding in only fourth has to be a syncro...when I had my 2009 si quite a few guys had issues with third. It is covered by Honda if your still under warranty----I wouldn't mess around I would bring it in immediately. It's also nice to leave a paper trail with your dealer on things like this so if tranny issues occur later on they can't blame it in a repair that was put off. Delayed maintenance is a quick out for dealerships.

I guess I'll ask, though it might not matter much.... at what speeds are you shifting into 4th?
