anyway to permanently turn it off so I can keep the hatch open without draining the battery?

Sure.

There are a few threads on this. you can replace the cargo light with a switched one.

Searching for "Cargo Light" should net you plenty of answers.

part # 34265-SFE-003, I paid $20 at my local Honda dealer, maybe cheaper elsewhere. Easy no-tools-needed swap, works great. A replacement lense that has a switch built-in.

The 2012's must be a little different because I'm pretty sure mine turns off automatically after 5 or 10 minutes of the hatch being open.

Yeah. This is funy I went camping in the fit this weeken and slept in the hatch. I wanted to keep it open since it was hot and I couldn't. Alll I could think about was this thread lol

For those rare nights and any of you others - have you not considered just taking the bulb out? Pretty simple.
